Twenty IC37s for the New York Yacht Club has turned out to be just the start, a further 20 deposits have now been put down, perhaps more by the time you read this update, and in Europe a famous boatbuilding team are busy polishing the second set of moulds
Hull no1 of the New York Yacht Club’s IC37 is in Newport and has been giving boat rides to impress all those who have been eagerly awaiting the chance to see this carefully-targeted project progress from design to construct to sail. But this is proving much more than the development of another nice but far from radical mid-size race yacht… the original order for 20 boats for the New York YC itself looks to be dwarfed soon as demand grows elsewhere in the US with the first stirrings of interest being seen in Europe as well. On top of the first 20 boats promised to the club the next 20 orders
are confirmed, primarily for the US but with a handful destined for foreign shores; it’s already safe to say this boat has struck a chord in the marketplace unlike any large keelboat of its kind in recent memory – probably going as far back as the launch of the Farr 40 OD in the summer of 1997. The scale of this demand evolved so fast, that to meet it, especially
as international interest grows, the alumni boatbuilders from Green Marine who have set up shop again in Lymington as Fibre Mechanics have agreed to take on production for non-US orders as well as help meet escalating demand from the US itself. The second set of tooling is now at Fibre Mechanics’ modern well-equipped facility and the moulds are being prepared as fast as possible. In the flesh the IC37 looks and feels better than all the renderings,
videos and testimonials can convey, because it’s here the trained eye can see the details: the simplicity of the winch layout, blocks and other deck fittings, and all seemingly exactly where you need them straight out the box. The construction details in the limited but functional interior show
where small amounts of carbon are used in the laminates for strength, nothing more, a paucity of thru-deck holes to leak, and a neat single- point lift for dry sailing. Similarly the rig and sailplan are also dead simple, tailored to the NYYC’s stipulation for a boat that can be raced
