CORSA 915 Everything started talking to a friend about the market offer for a raceboat around 30ft. Looking at the boats currently available, we soon realised there are plenty of interesting and expensive one-designs but no single boat specifically designed for anything other than one- design racing. Same story when looking at the secondhand market. Therefore, to be able to race outside the very expensive one-design field, the only choice for many owners was to adapt a one-design boat to handicap racing… and spend quite a big amount of money! We then thought it could be interesting to design a pure racing

boat at this size specifically for handicap racing, making it suitable for as many types of racing as possible: inshore and offshore, full crew and two-handed, ORCi, IRC and why not HP30 events? An inter- esting challenge from a designer’s perspective, especially when some more constraints have been added, including transportability (maximum beam) and a properly performing two-piece mast. What has emerged is a nicely balanced little boat, an all-round

performer that can be good for VMG racing but also exhilarating surfing down a reach. It is no longer the case that to have a good rating you need to slow the boat down – especially in the small boat divisions. Rating rules have evolved a lot in recent years leaving fewer stupid loopholes to exploit; today to get a high-performance vs rating ratio a designer needs to look at maximising efficiency. The hull has been designed to be as ‘dry’ as possible when upright

but powerful when heeled. Low freeboards with chamfered sheerline help in reducing aero drag but still leave enough room inside to make life bearable down below during offshores. The deck layout is simple and efficient for crewed and shorthanded sailing.

The sail plan is not extreme but it is designed to deliver the right

amount of power for any situation. The large jibs help in light air especially when accelerating and the long J allows multiple headsail set-ups offshore. The boat is fitted with a retractable bowsprit with a bobstay for offshore racing to carry big reaching sails. Appendages are a balance between ease of use and straightline

performances. The keel has a reverse ‘T’ with a long slim bulb, the rudder is quite large and well forward to maximise control in all conditions. An outboard engine sits on a hinged support in a central locker – a light solution that avoids a saildrive dragging through the water when sailing. The system also suits a full electric installation. Last but not least, a lot of effort was put in to limit the price to

just under ⇔100,000, which for a fast 30-footer with a full carbon rig is pretty interesting… Matteo Polli, Gorizia
