New Boats Table ‘Reassuringly expensive’
Their words not ours, but the first product of a novel partnership between the master craftsmen at Spirit Yachts in Suffolk, England and the electron-herders at BAR Technologies is worth a drool
SpiritBARTech35EF (again, their word not ours) They’re all at it… As Iain Percy’s Artemis breaks new ground with its promising and rapidly evolving range of efficient electric-powered commercial foiling vessels (Issue 522) so the legacy project of another half-decent Olympic sailor, Ben Ainslie’s BAR Technologies is focusing instead upon the luxury end of the leisure market. With the 35ft prototype now afloat, the Tech35EF is a high-speed
but quiet, electric launch-style foiling powerboat with a trio of active foils which can be retracted in displacement mode for a smoother ride and of course to reduce drag. The foils are currently fabricated in machined titanium, comprising
a single T-foil rudder aft for controlling pitch, an increasingly common inverted ‘Pi’ foil arrangement amidships, plus port and starboard trim tabs to manage roll. With a maximum beam of just 7ft 7in on an overall length of nearly
35ft this is obviously a very slender design. A deep-V hull with a stiletto-fine entry incorporating a single step amidships then evolves into a very flat run aft for efficient planing… at least on flat water. Top speed is quoted at 32kt with range estimated at around
100nm at a 22kt cruising speed. Again for a boat of this length displacement is very light at just 2,400kg dry, which helps in almost every respect except perhaps bouncing into a head sea (but then why would you?). The ‘latest’ Spirit Yachts design is best summed up as classically
modern. And frankly beautiful. Construction is cold-moulded timber on a robust carbon-reinforced shell; primary structure weight is a little over one-tonne. Ring frames and planking are in Alaskan yellow cedar with the
topsides finished with a thin decorative veneer of African Sipo mahogany. As with every yacht that emerges from this lustrous Suffolk boatyard, the stunning high-gloss clearcoat finish is taken for granted. Then again that classical six-seat cockpit can also be closed off

Yes it foils, yes it goes quite fast and with little fuss or noise. But let’s be honest, that’s not what really draws your eye, is it?
tonneau-style with a rigid cover (fits perfectly, of course) for a full 20th century, Sophia Loren top-down two-seater experience. Flat water testing is going to plan. (Careful) rough water testing
will follow in due course. But who really cares. This is quite simply the most magnificent
eye candy for anyone who combines a love of boats, fine craftsman- ship and anything made out of wood… as long as it’s varnished correctly. Which it is. All you then need is a 35ft-long drawing room and some strong
hooks to hang it on for those winter dinner parties. Elliott Masterton, Mayfair, London
