The majority of recent new Imocas have come from Guillaume Verdier, but his latest design is surely the most interesting… Macif for Charlie Dalin is quite different from anything that preceded her, with key features explained by Dalin himself in this issue (p44). The 2020-generation Sam Manuard design Hublot (below) features a bluff, rather simplistic scow bow; in the last Vendée Globe she proved fast and seakindly. And a wild card no more… Thomas Ruyant’s Finot-Koch design (left) takes the path of refined compromise. Neither scow nor skiff but perhaps the best of each. A finer bow for softer landings and wave penetration, then evolving aft with those ‘tulip’ sections to add buoyancy, shed water and make life a little easier for the pilot with better tracking. Ruyant’s For People retired in the Fastnet but the first two Imocas to round the rock were its sistership Arkéa Paprec (Yoann Richomme) tailgated by Dalin on Macif – with only four days’ sailing since launch. HOLA! – Terry Hutchinson At this writing many thoughts swirl. I will start with NYYC American Magic’s relocation to Barcelona. Moving 100 people plus families from Pensacola, Florida to Barcelona, Spain is no easy task. The weight of the move and organisational side falls on Tyson Lamond, our chief of operations, but execution is truly a team effort. To maximise our sailing time in Pensacola we staggered the move.

Their Barcelona base is being built between the aquarium and the superyacht marina. Like Team NZ, Ineos sailors combine their Cup preparations with SailGP events. ETNZ, American Magic and Alinghi have all sailed AC75s with
cyclors. These teams also each have two AC40s. This enables them to test foil and rudder designs on the AC40 they modify against their class-compliant AC40. These three teams can also do in-house race training with their AC40s. Neither Ineos nor Luna Rossa has sailed an AC75. Each built an
LEQ12 test boat and bought one AC40. Foil and sail controls on all of these boats are battery powered, so neither the Brits nor the Italians have trained with cyclors on the water. Race training with their LEQ12 boats against their class-compliant AC40s may not be as useful as training with two AC40s. In about a year we’ll see how these differing paths pan out on the race course.
Starting in February of this year we began losing equipment out of the Florida operation, tents, kitchens, all of which impacts the ease with which we operate daily. The phased redeployment of the team was a necessity and it was one of those things that allowed the sailing to continue while also getting sorted in Barcelona. Then there are the logistical challenges each team member and more importantly our families face. While the process has not been without issue the team did meet our operational sailing date which was an absolute win! Barcelona and its people have been awesome, considering that
in an eight-week period we relocated into 72 apartments and got sailing again – that only happened with a lot of local help and support. Our base is located inside the MB 92 Superyacht facility within
a big marina. A guard lets you in with a pass and that aspect of the set-up is nice. We are not accessible to the public which is a bummer but good to have the security of the marina. The sailing venue is good and no surprises. Lumpy water off the
seawall and beach. Some days have been unsailable yet not surprising because of the sea state. The sea breeze when it pumps is great and yet we know the warming waters will change a lot of the wind and sea conditions over the next 15 months. Going to be tricky! On the racing side Bella Mente have spent the last two months
working through the winter modifications. Twin-rudders, water ballast and a new Artemis Technologies appendage package.
