New Boats Table Seen leaving... The Manuard/Nivelt Lann Ael 3 gave an early foretaste of the IRC potential of the scow philosophy
Few would challenge Didier Gaudoux’s 35ft semi-scow as the best IRC design of 2023. Last year’s Fastnet was about the only thing Lann Ael didn’t win (halyard troubles struck when in pole position). Now designers VPLP in partnership with Joe Lacey’s new Rocket Yachts are pushing further into the same design space. Lacey will be familiar to many readers as a frequent contributor
to Seahorse. Mini Transat racer and a regular of the French offshore circuit, he holds a Master’s degree in naval architecture from Southampton and is also a well-respected project manager. Rocket Yachts was launched in partnership with Brittany-based
VPLP Design and boatbuilders Magma Composites. The brand aims to deliver premium, no-compromise offshore race yachts in turn- key ready-to-go condition. The first model is the 10m R10 – designed to win offshore races under IRC/ORC with a crew of 2-5 people. VPLP’s Quentin Lucet: ‘For more than a decade VPLP has studied
the evolution of offshore hull shapes in classes like the Imocas and Class 40s. If well executed it is now beyond doubt that scow-bow geometries can improve overall performance of a modern yacht. The soft bow shape and flat rocker promote planing downwind, while the immersed hull lines remain similar at a wide range of heel angles, which helps upwind and reaching. A good scow stays in balance even as it becomes overpowered. It is easier to manage, fun to sail and will be competitive under a good handicap rule like IRC.’ A deep bulb keel, 400l of water-ballast split into forward/aft
compartments, light displacement and powerful sailplan all add up to a seriously fast boat – conceptually closer to a Class40 than a traditional IRC design. An IRC TCC of 1.090 puts the R10 around 6% higher than a
typical comparable IRC design, but similar to IRC European Two- Handed Champion Lan Ael 3and around 5% lower than a Cape 31. The R10’s rating can, however, be squeezed down to below 1.080 using smaller jibs and just the aft 150l ballast tanks – a perfect set-up for transatlantic races such as the Cap Martinique.
