New Boats Table
in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Now on to Mark V! With two One Ton Cup wins under the belt Shaun Carkeek is ready for the next one…
Following the 2017 One Ton Cup and Fast40+ titles, our goal in 2017 was to continue the winning performances and work on developing our tools in order to increase our boats’ deltas vs the Fast40+ fleet. During the winter all our designs went through varying degrees of modification which proved successful this season. The upgrades were mostly based on an ongoing R&D programme, onboard data analysis, team feedback and lessons learnt over the previous season. Listening to our clients’ needs is a fundamental part of our process.
We’re pleased to have achieved uniform results with each client, albeit through different paths. Results tell the story and the Carkeek boats had a fantastic run again this year, winning 20 of 30 Fast40 races, plus four of the five rounds with Girls on Film 2 defending the One Ton Cup in emphatic style. Sisterships, Stewart Whitehead’s Rebellion and Bas de Voogd’s Hitchiker, finished 2nd and 3rd. Peter Morton’s 2017 Girls on Film 2(GoF 1is now Hitchiker) under-
Rán Racing for Niklas Zennstrøm. Niklas and his team led by Tim Powell are a welcome addition to the class and we are looking forward to maximising this new opportunity. As I write, the new Rán C40 MkV build is taking shape under the
went the most noticeable design changes and again proved the standout boat. We re-optimised the boat and set-up, designed a new structure, foil package plus deck layout tailored to Fast40+ courses. Looking ahead to 2018 we’re pleased to have secured the new
watchful eye of builder Jason Carrington. We have set the bar high and delivered a meticulously detailed turnkey design package that
I’m confident will continue to set the standard in the fleet. Our MkV design commenced with a blank sheet of paper to allow

maximum creativity. Simplification through integrated elegant design and engineering solutions has been our primary goal, ultimately reducing the number of parts, weight and improving efficiency. With regards to the naval architecture, this is actually our first pure
Fast40+, as our previous 40s were designed before the class rule was finalised. This allowed new freedom to introduce ideas into the hull shape, mode and set-up for relevant course types. However, our multidimensional optimisation process was referenced to both the Fast40 and IRC rules to allow a wide range of competitiveness. Systems engineering is a strongpoint and a degree of performance
improvement will flow from the design team’s attention to detail, particularly with regards to innovative engineering, systems and detail- ing where weight reduction and improving stiffness/strength are key. For our fifth-generation design we have also introduced our new
lightweight hybrid electric propulsion unit – designed in-house and now commercially available through our office. We look forward to seeing the new boats take shape! Shaun Carkeek, Carkeek Design Partners
