BY SAILORS FOR SAILORS

© SSL / Marc Rouiller M Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL)

ateusz Kusznierewicz is a Polish hero, winning two Olympic medals in the epic Finn class: gold in Atlanta (1996) and bronze in Athens

(2004). In the same class he was the World Champion in 1998 and 2000 and runner up in 1999, 2001 and 2002, he also claimed the European championship twice and is a ten time National Champion in Poland. He started sailing at the age of 9 on a Optimist at the Yacht Club of Poland in Warsaw. His first significant success in the inter- national arena was the Junior World Championship in the OK-Dinghy class in 1990 and in 1992, he started in the Finn class.

After finishing with the Finn, he successfully moved to the Star class: together with crew Dominik Zycki in 2008 he won the World Championship and eleven years later, he won it for the second time, last June in Porto Cervo, Italy, with Brazilian crew Bruno Prada. He won the European title in 2012, just before the Olympic Games in London in 2012, after which he ended his Olym- pic career but didn’t give up sport altogether. At the end of 2013, he successfully launched, among others sailing le- gends, the Star Sailors League and he won the silver medal in that first SSL Finals.

Involved in numerous social and business activities, in July 2009, he was appointed Ambassador of the City of Gdansk for Maritime Affairs by President Paweł Ada- mowicz. Kusznierewicz is also the commander of the annual

Sail Sailing Rally Baltic Sail - the largest international sailing event in Gdansk.

Mateusz, is the captain of the Polish team for the SSL Gold Cup, but he is also the SSL Gold Cup Sport Manager, a key role for the new innovative Star Sailors League project. “The SSL Gold Cup will be like the world cup in Football, but in Sailing! So Dennis Conner said and so it will be! With the top athletes, the suspense, the fans, the flags, the national pride; audience, popular jubilation; winners, losers, and finally heroes and legends, models for generations who invite them to extend the story. Dennis has been thinking about it for a long time, and here it is: in 2021, with the SSL Gold Cup, sailing will have its “World Cup”! Nothing revolutionary for sport, but absolutely new for sai- ling and a big step for the Star Sailors League.”
