New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team New for old(er)

Just take a TP52 and give it a (very) hot wash… Still very fast but a lot easier to fit in your driveway after racing, the most popular of the original GP26 designs has had a makeover

When the GP 26 class was introduced about a decade ago the desire was to motivate designers, builders and owners to try their hand at creating their own versions of fast, stable and affordable designs that could be level-raced. Cost and unfortunate economic timing hindered initial interest but some interesting boats were built, the most recent being the pretty Jim Donovan-designed Wrace GP26 that was – and still is – manufactured at Mag Marin in Turkey. After encouraging early sales at boatshows in the US unhelpful

treatment at the hands of the PHRF rating system slowed things down. However, now this quick 26-footer is back with the benefit of well thought-through performance upgrades and an experienced new class and sales management in place from Stagg Yachts. Rechristened the Donovan 26 One Design, the boat now vaults

out of the original GP26 box with significant updates including: l 800mm longer bowsprit, 300mm longer boom and gooseneck lowered 75mm to allow a larger mainsail and spinnaker l Topmast runners for the bigger square-top mainsail l Added pit winch and spinnaker takedown system l Deck layout redesign to generally improve ergonomics The optimisations were orchestrated by two-time Charleston Race

Week winner Mike Beasely: ‘I love this boat. I think it’s one of the greatest 26-footers out there. It’s a terrific all-around boat, very versatile, and I think the modifications are going to make this a mini rocketship. The updated version will plane earlier and simply go faster in all conditions.’

A modest fleet of Wrace 26s – now speeded up and re-dubbed the Donovan 26 One Design – enjoyed some good boat for boat racing at Charleston Race Week last year, pushing each other to score well in the sportboat division. Makes a J/24 look old!

The hull, mast, rudder and keel remain unchanged, with Stagg Yachts

offering an upgrade package to owners of existing boats in the US and elsewhere. There is also a new one-design class rule with limits on the number of professionals onboard and the number of sails that can be purchased each year. Mag Marin has the tooling ready so a new boat can still be yours for Charleston 2018 – if you move fast.

Expect this new IRC56 to be giving the latest Teasing Machine some competition A possible run of yet another lightweight and fast luxury cat. Lift foils and daggerboards Jérémie Beyou gets a new sponsor and (finally) his first brand new Imoca 60

Based on Finot-Conq’s Imoca 60 work, very purposeful carbon/Nomex 53-footer heavily race-influenced but designed for long-range cruising with a double-handed crew. The foils are all retractable to maximise shoal access

Now in the Hugo Boss new boat pipeline but who will get the current boat?

Young Swiss skipper Alan Roura’s trusty 2006 Imoca is gaining foils from Mick Kermarec Whizzy IRC-targeted racer-cruiser. Looks like a mini-Cannonball Very light (17-tonne) all-carbon double una-rig cruiser-racer! The design R&D is almost finished for the new Bella Mente Contemporary performance cruiser, possible series production? There are also a 96 and a 70 on the drawing board. MSY is on a roll Smaller Wally is aggressively styled and reflects the latest Maxi72s

She’s back in the shed to be speeded up some more… expect substantial changes The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power for silent running…

One of no fewer than seven new TP52s from the Botín studio, the latest Quantum programme will run alongside the New York Yacht Club America’s Cup challenge – with plenty of crossover in crew and technical development
