Bad ass French skipper Fred Puzin’s new Carrington Boats-built Carkeek 54 Daguet 5 was the only real competition for Niklas Zennstrøm’s own Carkeek 52 Rán among the big boats at this year’s Nelson’s Cup inshore regatta and the subsequent Caribbean 600. It had been expected that this latest Daguet would be competing as part of a second French team at this year’s Admiral’s Cup, but at the time of writing that is looking doubtful. Puzin’s offshore record is consistently impressive, however, scoring wins and podiums in most of the classics including the Hobart and Middle Sea races; based on that, while Puzin may not race the Admiral’s Cup, expect him to be fully prepared to challenge for this year’s Fastnet Trophy with his new fluorescent green design. The big-boat group at the Admiral’s Cup may prove fascinating, with a handful of larger yachts in the 54-56ft range to challenge the rest of a group made up mostly of TP52s of various vintages. Of these bigger yachts it is really only the always well-sailed Rán – with a new crew for the Cup which now includes Bouwe Bekking and Justin Slattery – and the USA’s 56-footer Black Pearl who have a shot at beating the TPs inshore; but on the offshore stages – especially the Fastnet – a boat like the French Nivelt-Muratet designed 54-footer Teasing Machine is always hard to beat. Similarly France’s smaller boat, Albator, from the same design team, has been getting better and better with each outing – but once again more of an offshore package than most of her small boat rivals. July in Cowes will be interesting
