impact; while Simon Adamson from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and James Chadwick from University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, will discuss the ‘engineers of the future’. Following the second day’s keynote
presentations, NHSI will lead a workshop centred around ‘Safety, Workforce, and Resilience’, but with the focus dictated in advance by attendees.
Innovation and technology are the buzzwords around this year’s event
This year the keynote presentations will be in the new Plenary Theatre in the main exhibition hall and will be free to attend for delegates.
The cream of the crop
Keynote speeches will be given by Simon Corben, director and head of profession for NHS Estates and Facilities at NHS Improvement; Alasdair Coates, Engineering Council chief executive; Professor Michail Kagioglou, Dean of the University of Huddersfield; and Alan Sharp, chief executive of the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
Also in the main exhibition hall will be seven theatres giving visitors an opportunity to catch up on the latest products, regulations, and best practice. The theatres are HVAC & Engineering; Infection Control and Water; Design and Construction; Training, Staffing and Apprentice; Energy and Sustainability; Facilities Management; and Fire and Security. The Strategy and Leadership stream
features sessions on infrastructure and the climate of the future; the creation of an index to compare the response and preparedness of cities to health challenges; and the design of an operating theatre of the future; while the Innovation stream looks into the future with AI and its relationship to the hospital engineer. And this year’s IHEEM Awards dinner will be held on the first evening at a new venue, The Principle Manchester, an eye-catching Grade II listed building dating from 1890. The awards up for grabs are: • New Build Project of the Year • Refurbishment Project of the Year • Product Innovation • Architectural Practice of the Year • Apprentice of the Year • Sustainable Achievement
• Estates and Facilities Team • Consultancy of the Year • IHEEM Lifetime Achievement Award
A spokesman for the organisers said: “Innovation and technology are the buzzwords around this year’s event, which will be an international hub of peer-to-peer idea exchanges, with visitors, delegates, and speakers expected from the 14 countries.
Compare and contrast “A compare-and-contrast approach across the conference and exhibition theatre programmes will highlight the very best in hospital design, management, and maintenance across Europe and beyond, and discussion on best practice, innovation, and more-efficient ways of providing
patient care, will provide delegates with tangible solutions to issues in their hospitals.”
He added: “The UK’s decision to leave the EU has not created the funding pressures on the NHS, but it is likely to exacerbate them. “Brexit is also likely to worsen existing staff shortages, potentially reducing service quality. “Training and staffing will, therefore, form a key part of the programme, with an emphasis on engineering and the importance of attracting women into engineering and the NHS. “And the main theatre will include inspirational speakers who will discuss other industries that have attracted women and diverse groups, how this worked, and how the engineering sector can appeal to these groups.”
