New Prime Minister announces NHS cash boost

Much has happened since the last edition of hdm that has impacted greatly on the healthcare estate.

While Brexit talks rumble on, having a continued negative impact on construction activity; the appointment of Boris Johnson as the new Prime Minister has led to the announcement of a £1.8billion investment in NHS estates and facilities.

This includes an £850m moneypot to upgrade existing facilities and embrace the very-latest technologies.

There will also be a £1billion boost to NHS capital spending, helping cash- strapped trusts to tackle the most-urgent infrastructure problems.

You can read a full breakdown of this investment in our News report on p7.

In this edition we are also looking at how the design of healthcare facilities is evolving, with an interview with Building Design Partnership (BDP) on its fresh approach to the creation of emergency care facilities (p13).

And, in our Carbon Reduction section (p25), you can read about how the NHS has been set tough new targets to dramatically reduce its environmental impact and find out about the ways in which it is hoping to do this.

Features in this edition include an overview of the latest healthcare flooring ranges, with a particular focus on wayfinding and how flooring solutions have helped to create a therapeutic environment for children with austism (p30).

There’s also an update on arts and health (p41), with an overview of some of the latest projects, and interviews with experts who pose tough questions over whether current schemes are meeting the needs of patients.

And we look at how lighting controls are increasingly being incorporated into modern nurse call systems (p52).

Plus, you can find out what’s in store at this year’s Healthcare Estates conference and exhibition with our event preview (p50).
