SAFETY ON SITE SURVEY

It’s been long known that union workplaces are safer workplaces, and across the construction sector Unite and its army of health and safety reps work tirelessly to ensure sites are as safe as possible, writes Keith Hatch.

But the building industry can still be a dangerous sector to work in. In its last report the HSE said that of the 138 workers killed in work-related accidents during 2023/24, 51 were in construction, adding that “Several thousand construction workers are injured each year following a trip or slip whilst at work on a building site.”

The HSE says that the workforce needs to be involved and consulted about on-site health and safety issues – something that Unite has always done by listening to members’ concerns, taking part in safety inspections and investigating accidents at work.

To do this as effectively as it can the union needs as much information as possible, which is why it has launched an HS2 Health and Safety Survey.

The survey only takes a few minutes to complete and is an important way to hear from construction workers at HS2 about their concerns regarding on site safety as well as what improvements they would like to see.

The survey covers issues such as general feelings about site Health & Safety, adequate free PPE, proper welfare conditions at work as well as working temperatures and adequate protection from the elements.

Unite national officer Jason Poulter encourages everyone working on the HS2 project to take the time to complete the survey.

Jason said, “Surveys like this only take a few minutes to complete, but are vitally important that workers have their say, and the information will help Unite officers and reps better

understand the health and safety issues facing workers at HS2.

“The survey is aimed at all workers on the site. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Unite member or not - we want to hear from you.”

National lead organiser for construction Len Jones added, “The survey gives the chance for workers to have their say on the everyday issues that affects them at work, and it is vitally important that your voice is not only heard but taken seriously in making the appropriate changes.

“These types of surveys have worked well on other major projects like HPC in which I have worked on for the last seven years.”

Unite is also keen to hear from anyone interested in getting involved in the union campaign to improve onsite safety and ensure accident numbers in construction decline over the coming years.
