newsTop stories Hinkley ESOL support
Unite members at Hinkley Point C are embracing new learning opportunities, with a strong uptake for ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) courses recently introduced on-site.
This follows a successful agreement with construction firm Kaefer, negotiated by Unite reps Sam Thomas, Declan Walsh, and Skarlat Rodrigues (left).
The initiative supports members who speak English as a second language and allows reps to identify wider learning needs.
Unite regional officer Brett Sparkes supported the Hinkley reps and was really pleased they had successfully negotiated with the employer to pay for the courses.
Skarlat Rodrigues said, “As an immigrant and health and safety rep, I’m proud to see the ESOL program making our workplace more inclusive, supportive, and empowering for all.”
On course for success – ESOL at HPC
Twenty-two workers, mainly from Brazil and Eastern Europe, have already signed up for ESOL courses, which will begin in September, and the reps have organised another enrolment event to encourage even more workers to benefit.
