Thousands of workers are set to benefit from a new government on-the-job training and career opportunities in construction, it was announced recently.
Unite welcomed the government initiative – leading to an industry commitment of 100,000 new construction jobs annually by the end of the Parliament.
Unite will sit on the new Construction Skills Mission Board (CSMB), alongside government ministers and CEOs from across the sector.
EARLY ONE MORNING…
It’s Friday, it’s sunny – time to hand out the latest buildingWORKER journal to workers starting the day at a central London site.
Our intrepid Unite activists, some of whom are pictured, were handing out copies near Oxford Circus, and Unite regional officer Declan Murphy said, “We were out early in the West End this morning, with branch members, letting workers on a Skanska and a Bovis project know they have a union out there, ready and willing to fight for them.”
Early birds - intrepid team strikes again GET ON COURSE
Change at Work will identify the key issues of sector policy that the national industrial sector committee has prioritised for implementation in workplaces and branches.
It is open to senior workplace, health and safety, learning and equality reps working in the building products sub-group within the construction sector who have, at a minimum, completed their stage one course in their region.
Delegates are expected to be present for the course’s full duration, and as this is a residential course, all accommodation and meals are provided at the venue.
Talk to your branch reps if interested.
Change at Work runs over five consecutive days at The View Hotel, Eastbourne, November 24 – 28, 2025.

The partnership between Jobcentres and the industry should give more people the skills they need to start fulfilling careers. Unite will play a critical role in ensuring workplace health and safety and that the pay and conditions are suitable for the roles being created.
Unite national officer Jason Poulter added, “This is the largest investment in skills for a generation. The creation of the CSMB is a clear demonstration of industry’s commitment to support the skilled construction workforce of tomorrow.”
