With TV presenter Chris Packham joining demonstrators on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral in October, rewilding of the church estate is back in the news.
Chris was part of a rally organised by the group Wild Card which marched from the Tate Modern to St Paul’s. Protesters were calling on the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England to rewild 30 per cent of their 105,000-acre landholdings by 2030.
Speaking on the steps he urged, “Church leaders to step up to the pulpit” and, with the Church being one of the biggest landowners in England, show leadership “in restoring our precious wildlife”.
Wild Card argued that if just a third of Church Commission land was rewilded, “it could create an area 90 times the size of Hyde Park, providing much-needed refuge for British wildlife.”
