FOOD HEROES’ FAIR PAY FIGHT

Bakkavor treats our heroes like zeroes

Over 700 workers in Spalding, Lincolnshire, have been taking all- out continuous strike action since mid-September in protest at a paltry pay offer from their employer, food manufacturer Bakkavor Group.

Members of Unite work in food preparation and manufacturing at the Bakkavor site. They make and

prepare meals, soups, dips, salads, desserts, pizzas and breads for Bakkavor’s clients, which include supermarket giants Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose.

Staff earn just above the minimum wage and have overwhelmingly rejected a pay offer of six per cent that was put forward in May.

14 uniteLANDWORKER Autumn 2024

Meanwhile, the company reported astonishing half-year profits of £55m for 2024.

Workers at the company spend long shifts working in near-freezing temperatures, doing repetitive and demanding manual work for very low pay.
