BUSINESS Walking the talk


LSBU’s School of Business has achieved accreditation from the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE), and is now a recognised IOEE Centre of Excellence. The award depends on meeting 12 stringent criteria, including responding to market trends, making use of best practice, embracing new technologies and encouraging creativity and innovation. LSBU ‘fully met’ all 12 criteria, with assessors describing the School as ‘very student-focused’ and having a ‘strong enterprising culture’. The IOEE also supported the School in revalidating its undergraduate courses,


and will be working with LSBU to further develop its business programme. ‘Accreditation sends a clear signal that we’re not just talking about supporting enterprise, we’re doing it,’ says Professor Mike Molan, Dean of the School of Business. ‘We look forward to working with the IOEE to give our students even more help to develop an enterprising mindset so they can deliver innovative solutions, whether in the private sector, public sector or their own business.’

Innovate UK has awarded £2.9 million to a consortium BUSINESS INTERNATIONAL Real world impact


LSBU’s International Office and the School of Business have held a graduation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur to mark the 25th anniversary of sponsored students from Malaysia’s Ministry of Health joining LSBU programmes, notably the MSc International Health Services and Hospital Management. In all, 23 current students and alumni joined the celebration, which was led by Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Business School Professor Mike Molan. ‘It was a real privilege to take part in the ceremony,’ he says. ‘It’s brilliant to see that so many of our graduates have gone on to be successful, and to use their degrees to enhance the health service in Malaysia. It’s a great example of how the quality of LSBU’s teaching is benefitting our students.’

A higher level UNIVERSITY NEWS


LSBU is playing a key role in the development of Degree Apprenticeships: vocational degree courses that give students a thorough academic grounding at the same time as gaining skills and experience. LSBU is working with industry as part of the trailblazer consortiums for surveying, civil engineering and building services engineering, and is already delivering Degree Apprenticeships in Building Surveying and Quantity Surveying. ‘The construction sector faces skills shortages and apprenticeships are a vital tool to help,’ says Professor Charles Egbu, Dean of the School of the Built Environment and Architecture. ‘LSBU is working closely with employers and industry bodies to train highly employable graduates on fully accredited courses.’
