_Welcome
Welcome to the spring edition of South Bank. As usual, it’s been a busy six months at London South Bank University and you’ll find a summary of what’s been happening on and off campus on our News pages. In the rest of the magazine, we’ve taken an in-depth look at some of the topics currently dominating the headlines and asked the South Bank community to share their opinions and experiences. The UN Refugee Agency called 2015 ‘The Year of Europe’s Refugee
Crisis’: hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants arrived on European shores; and thousands more lost their lives on the journey. On page 20, you’ll find a range of perspectives on the current crisis, including personal accounts of fleeing war and persecution and the challenges of settling in a new country. This is an issue that affects us all, and I’m sure you will find it a moving and thought-provoking read. On page 12, we address the media frenzy surrounding the NHS head
on in this edition’s big issue, ‘Who cares?’, where LSBU staff and alumni report back from the front line of care in the UK. Whether you work in healthcare or simply use the health service, their views provide food for thought about the future of the NHS. On page 10 we tackle another pressing real-world question, with final year PhD student Genevieve Waterhouse discussing her research into the policing of domestic abuse. Moving away from the grittier issues, there is much to look forward to
in the coming months, including the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. What better excuse to track down Dr Karl Cooke, the sports science alumnus playing a major role in preparing the British swimming team for success? You can read more about his journey to the Games on page 25. Last but not least, on page 28 we look at performance from a different angle, by exploring the potential impact of Building Information Modelling on the construction industry. It’s another packed edition, and one that reflects the varied
and impressive careers of LSBU alumni. As always, your comments, suggestions and feedback are welcome.
