Smart specifying secures funding

T

he Department for Education’s £3bn framework to build Britain’s next generation

of schools is forms a part of the Government’s climate change target to cut emissions by 78% by 2035, on its way to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The DfE has set out its funding criteria to contractors seeking to be awarded framework agreements to build new schools, which includes strict net zero carbon targets. Contractors have adapted swiftly to introduce sustainability credentials and practices in order to achieve the DofE’s target by placing focus on specifying low carbon materials, recyclability and off-site manufacturing. There are many reasons why a solid hardwood

sports flooring system from Junckers is one of the best options available to schools. Not only does it comply fully with the Education and Skills Funding Agency’s specification guidelines, a Junckers floor has the right environmental credentials to contribute towards net zero carbon builds, all independently assessed. Junckers offers responsibly sourced wood with

FSC® and PEFC™ accreditation, along with EPDs (Environmental Product Declaration). An EPD assess the manufacturing and material sourcing activities of a company and presents data in relation to the company’s environmental impact, resource use, waste categories and output flow.

As a manufacturer who demonstrates the sustainability of its products with traceability and transparency Junckers can simplify the specification process a great deal, a consideration many main contractors have made use of as more and more schools in the UK have a Junckers floor installed. Hardwood is a natural, biodegradable, and

recyclable material and it is non-hazardous when disposed of. Most other flooring types will not last as long, which puts greater pressure on landfill as well as challenges in terms of chemical release during disposal. For example, a solid wood floor has a lifespan four times that of an engineered floor, meaning the total amount of energy used for solid wood floors is further reduced as one solid wood floor is manufactured for every four engineered floors. Solid wood sports floors have always been

regarded as a high-quality choice providing a safe, high performing floor with unbeatable lifecycle costs that fall within, and in some areas exceed requirements set out by governing bodies to ensure safe and well-performing floors which at the same time represent value for money. A hard- wearing and long-lasting choice, a Junckers floor is an investment that will outlast any other sports flooring surface. It can be sanded and re-finished eight to ten times during its life and with 12-year

intervals between sandings, a typical lifespan of 60 years will comfortably be exceeded. Schools may take advantage of Junckers’ Approved Contractors maintenance scheme and 25-year warranty to ensure periodic inspections of the floor are made and a regular maintenance programme is in place, which will keep the floor in optimum condition throughout its life. Not only for new builds, but a solid wood floor

in a retrofit scheme can also provide the same environmental credentials to a project. Installation methods and considerations may differ, but a reputable manufacturer will have a solution to counter most issues. A solid wood floor is a beautiful backdrop in any building, but there is more to specifying flooring than looks. A knowledgeable technical team coupled with good continuity of supply can make all the difference to finishing a project on time and on budget.
