Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust receives coveted Sandford Award

Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust has received the esteemed Sandford Award for high achievement in heritage education. This award reflects the excellence of the sessions delivered by the team, which includes work with schools, colleges and universities as well as families, community and special interest groups.

The Sandford Award has been running since 1978 and is the only nationally recognised quality mark for heritage learning, providing independent assurance for heritage sites and services.

In the sessions observed by the assessor, the quality of teaching was deemed extremely high, the content and quality of the sessions were praised, and use of the historic environment to enhance the learning provision was considered excellent.

Stephen Billington, Head of Lifelong Learning, said: “Education is central to delivering Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust’s charitable purpose and engaging audiences in learning about the significance and role of the former Royal Dockyard is at the heart of everything we do. Receiving the Sandford Award is a huge honour, and we could not be happier. Our team are passionate about sharing over 400 years

of dockyard history and creating an inclusive environment for young people to learn. We offer a varied programme of activity throughout the year and this prestigious award gives testament to the quality of the experience. We hope to see many more young people through our doors in the coming years.”

New Early Years Apprenticeship from Skern Training and Skills

Apprenticeships in Early Years education take place in a range of settings, including nurseries, childcare facilities, preschools, and hospitals. STS programmes offer high quality training that incorporate practical learning experience, earn-while-you-learn incentives and opportunities for career advancement.

STS’s apprenticeships are accessible for all companies large or small. Apprenticeship programmes allow businesses to fill key skills gaps, identify developing talent and support staff retention and team longevity. STS’s tailor-made programmes cater specifically for an organisation’s particular needs and incorporate the organisation’s culture, vision and values into course content to ensure each apprenticeship fits in seamlessly and delivers strong outcomes.

Skern Training & Skills (STS) is now offering an Early Years Apprenticeship programme across three levels. The course launched at the end of April with 20 participants, marking the further expansion of STS’s quality apprenticeship programmes in a fifth sector, alongside Agriculture, Leadership and Management, Outdoor Education and Hospitality.

STS is a division of leading outdoor education provider Inspiring Learning and is specifically focused on devising and delivering apprenticeship courses.

The STS Early Years course will cover Level 2 – Practitioner, Level 3 – Educator and Level 5 – Lead and, notably, will also incorporate paediatric first aid into the curriculum.

Alex Coyle, Head of Skern Training and Skills, said: “We’re delighted to have launched our Early Years apprenticeship programmes, bringing the sectors in which we are active as a specialist apprenticeship course provider to five.

“At STS we work closely with the employer to ensure the apprentice has the right support to achieve their potential. Our courses are flexible, adaptable and bespoke, based on our detailed knowledge and experience and delivered by our professional, experienced and passionate team.”
