Essex pupils welcomed into new net zero school
The first pupils at Limebrook Primary School are settling in after Morgan Sindall
Construction’s Essex business handed the keys to Essex County
Council at the start of the school year.
The brand-new school features 13 classrooms, a practical room, a studio, and a SEN room, accommodating 420 children in total, with the addition of a new nursery with capacity of 56 places for 0-4 year olds. Pupils can also enjoy a large sports field, multi-use, hard-court games area, a habitat area, and wildflower meadows on-site, while parents will benefit from a car park with electric vehicle chargers. Limebrook Primary School is set to deliver net-zero in operation by utilising Photovoltaic (PV) panels and air-source heat pumps which streamline energy efficiency, while the implemented mechanical and natural ventilation strategy and airtightness of the building retain a comfortable temperature for students and staff. The project’s unique drive for sustainability continued from construction to completion. Through use of the data-driven tool CarboniCa, Morgan Sindall reduced carbon emissions by over 90%, utilising responsibly sourced, palm-oil-free HVO during the development work instead of diesel. By continuing Morgan Sindall’s award-winning 10 Tonne Challenge, the project saved 290.4 tonnes of CO2, which is the equivalent of heating over 107 UK homes for a whole year. In line with its Intelligent Solutions approach, Morgan Sindall has utilised BAMTech reinforcement which enhanced the structure’s strength and speed of construction. The school also features a steel frame with a mix of brickwork and Cedral Click cladding, boosting energy efficiency and durability.
Premier League launches anti-bullying resources for primary teachers
The Premier League has teamed up with the Anti- Bullying Alliance to launch a new set of free, curriculum- linked teaching resources for schools titled ‘Choose Respect’ in support of Anti- Bullying Week 2024 (11 to 15
November). This year’s focus is on respect for all, regardless of gender, race, or ability, and applying it in real-life situations. Available on the Premier League Primary Stars education website, the free resources are designed for children aged 7-11 and equip teachers with tools to effectively address bullying. The football-themed lessons use the sport’s appeal to inspire meaningful classroom conversations, encourage reflection on behaviour, and promote respectful relationships.
Launched in 2017, Premier League Primary Stars is the Premier League’s primary school education programme. Funded by the Premier League, via the Premier League Charitable Fund, the programme uses the appeal of football to help children to learn, be active and develop essential life skills.
The free programme provides teachers and parents with access to more than 650 downloadable resources across a range of curriculum subjects at Key Stage 1 (age 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (age 7-11), developed by teachers for teachers, and in collaboration with subject experts. Premier League Charitable Fund Chief Executive, Ruth Shaw OBE, said: “The new Premier League Primary Stars Choose Respect resource uses children’s passion for football to engage them in learning. Promoting respect in schools is vital for creating safe, inclusive environments where children can thrive.”
Teachers across England and Wales can download the ‘Choose Respect’ resources for free from the Premier League Primary Stars website.

Greatfields Primary School opens its doors
Councillor Jane Jones, Barking and Dagenham Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care and Disabilities, officially opened the newly completed Greatfields Primary School in Barking.
This marks the culmination of a decade of planning, development, and regeneration on the former Gascoigne Estate. The school has started with an initial intake of 30 students, and will eventually serve 630 pupils, significantly expanding local educational capacity and meeting the growing demand for high-quality education in the area.
Greatfields Primary is the latest addition to the council’s ambitious vision of providing excellent, accessible schools for local residents. It builds on the success of Greatfields Secondary School, which is rated “Good” by Ofsted.
The new primary school is under the leadership of the headteacher from Riverside Primary School, also rated “Good” by Ofsted, ensuring continuity in high standards of teaching, leadership, and overall student experience from day one.
Councillor Jane Jones said: “Greatfields Primary will play a key role in shaping the futures of countless children, and we look forward to seeing it flourish as a cornerstone of the community.”
