Trees planted to commemorate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee

Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Major Grenville Irvine-Fortescue was joined by pupils and teachers when planting trees at The Gordon Schools in Huntly to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The Green Canopy is part of a

series of events across Aberdeenshire and beyond marking this most remarkable milestone of The Queen’s reign, which began in 1952. The Deputy Lieutenant was joined by Head Teacher Phil Gaiter, pupils,

teachers, and parents and carers during the tree planting ceremony on Wednesday, May 4. Mr Gaiter said: “It was a privilege to welcome the Deputy Lieutenant of

Aberdeenshire Major Grenville Irvine-Fortescue to The Gordon Schools in Huntly. The young people were looking forward to this really special event. “The trees will not only act as a symbol of Her Majesty The Queen’s

enduring reign they will also be useful for outdoor learning and the environment.” There have been several Green Canopy tree planting ceremonies taking

place across Aberdeenshire to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The focal point of the national celebrations will be over the Platinum

Jubilee weekend with an extended Bank Holiday from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5.

Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE visits Dewsbury school

Thornhill Junior & Infant School recently welcomed Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE to the school as part of her campaign for water safety to promote the new swimming centre in Batley and provide every child in school with a free swimming session. Talking to all the pupils in what was described as an ‘inspirational

assembly’, she promoted the importance of water safety in and around the local area whilst sharing her passion for swimming. Throughout the school’s teaching in PE, they are always promoting

positive role models. When the opportunity came for the four-time Olympic medallist to visit the school, teachers jumped at the chance, sharing clips of her winning races during the Beijing and London Olympic Games. Rebecca brought some of her Olympic medals and gave several children

the chance to hold and admire them, also providing students with an autographed picture. The children were full of enthusiasm for her visit and had prepared

plenty of questions to ask which she patiently and happily answered. Fiona Gardiner, Headteacher at Thornhill Junior & Infant School, said:

“The children and staff were really excited to meet Rebecca and she exceeded our expectations.

“We really hope as a school that as many children as possible will take

Rebecca up at the chance of a free swimming session and feel inspired to work as hard towards their goals as she spoke about.”
