CONTENTS Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. With exam season now well and truly upon us, this month we’re taking a four feature deep dive into the world of assessment, looking at the ways the current system could be improved to be more inclusive and fairer for learners of all abilities. In the first feature, we hear from Keith Metcalfe, Headmaster at Malvern College, who argues that insisting on handwritten exam papers is denying students the option to determine the best medium for them to express themselves in exams. In our second, Ian Castledine, Head of Proposition for Assessment at RM, argues that a new assessment model is now needed to truly bring education into the 21st century. Our third feature offers some top tips on maintaining good brain health and function through the use of key nutrients in the company of Caroline Hind, registered nutritional therapist at Vitaminology, while in our fourth and final look at the topic, Professor Bryan Maddox and Naomi Care of Assessment MicroAnalytics™ describe their vision for an inclusive onscreen assessment experience designed to enhance the exam experience for learners with SEND. As if that weren’t enough, we also take our

annual look at outdoor learning with Elaine Skates, Head of Learning and Skills at the Heart of England Forest, who argues that the failure by policymakers to address inequalities in access to nature for children, and the lack of recognition of the importance of outdoor learning in helping children improve their wellbeing, happiness and academic attainment, will create lasting harm and increase societal inequalities. Elsewhere, as always, we have news, views

and our line-up of regular contributors, and a fascinating View from the classroom piece from The Academy of St Nicholas in Garston, south Liverpool. Remember, we love to hear from you, you

can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, as well as by phone or email.

Enjoy the issue!
