Rocksteady’s award-winning music education is a big hit with primary schools

beat and rhythm would calm them, it’s really a different type of mindfulness.“ But it wasn’t just the impact on this individual child that Catherine spotted as she adds: “You really notice the energetic, happy vibe coming from the children ahead of their lesson and they come out with the biggest of smiles. They clearly love it.”

Hassle free for schools!

Band lessons take place during the school day, like most other peripatetic teaching. Rocksteady band leaders bring all the equipment to school, so there’s no need to buy or store instruments. What’s more, the team look after all the administration. To maintain the highest teaching quality and consistency, all band leaders are permanent staff, employed directly by Rocksteady. They benefit from a rigorous recruitment process, extensive training and continuous support, and development. There are also supporting regional managers, plus specialist teams based centrally. For schools there is a dedicated support team and online portal on hand to make everything easy and hassle free.

ifteen years ago, visionary music teacher and Rocksteady Founder Mark Robinson discovered that teaching music in a band setting, using child-led practices, not only speeds up the rate of musical progression, but can deliver a life- changing impact on children’s wellbeing, confidence and learning.

Thousands of primary schools already love and trust Rocksteady Music School’s weekly in- school peripatetic rock and pop band lessons, where pupils learn drums, keyboard, electric guitar, bass or vocals. Now, the UK’s leading rock school has been awarded ‘Wellbeing Resource of the Year’ at the Education Today Awards 2022, as voted for by teachers across the country who recognised the value of Rocksteady’s progressive and inclusive music education for their pupils.

Today tens of thousands of 4-11 year olds learn to play music through this unique child- led pedagogy, which makes learning music fun and accessible.

Rebecca Stacey Co-Head of Boxgrove Primary School in Guildford says: “For their mental health and wellbeing, it’s absolutely essential that we allowed Rocksteady to come and work with our kids.”

Children work through a curriculum of up to 300 skills, including instrument and performance techniques. Lessons are designed to build on each child’s individual learning and motivational styles. Proprietary education technology is used to register pupils’ progress through the Rocksteady curriculum within their regular band lessons and performances, while they learn at their own pace in a supportive environment.

Band lessons help children’s progress at school

Playing in a band with their peers also helps children’s progress back in the classroom through improved, confidence, teamwork, co- ordination, concentration, listening skills and overall wellbeing, as Adam Khan Headteacher at Helsby Hillside Primary school confirms: “Our children love their Rocksteady lessons. They really feed off the teamwork and the kind and supportive tuition. It is fabulous to see them perform at the end of each term. We have found that the confidence built as musicians translates to confidence throughout the curriculum.”

In a survey 100% of headteachers said that Rocksteady lessons have a significant positive impact on their pupils* and over 90% of parents observed that Rocksteady lessons improves their child’s wellbeing.

Case Study – William Martin Primary School, Essex

At William Martin Primary School, Rocksteady has become a real lifeline for one pupil, as Catherine Kiff, Integrative Art Psychotherapist with The Vine Trust in Harlow, explains: “One of the pupils we were undertaking art therapy with was really struggling with the school environment. We had tried several techniques with them including mindfulness, then we noticed that their Rocksteady lesson had an incredibly positive impact on them. Playing drums and focusing on the beat helped them regulate their own emotions and from a therapeutic perspective they had much better days in the classroom as a result. When they struggled to manage their emotions, the
