Jisc launches new digital storytelling community of practice

Jisc has partnered with experts from Durham University and Ulster University to launch a new community of practice designed to support educators and students in the use of digital storytelling. Digital storytelling uses multi-media tools such as video, images and audio to construct compelling, immersive narratives and bring content to life. Students and staff are increasingly using digital storytelling as a powerful tool for expression and communication. However, there has been no dedicated space for sharing best practice across the UK higher and further education (HE and FE) sectors - until now.

Richard Beggs, senior lecturer in higher education practice, Ulster University said: “Storytelling has always played an integral part in my professional life. From being a graphic and interactive designer in my younger years to my current role in academia, I have used storytelling to sell products, to get others to understand difficult concepts, and to get colleagues to critically reflect on their research or pedagogic challenges.

“Without storytelling, I simply would not be where I am now, and I want others to benefit from the practice of storytelling so that they too can thrive.”

Teti Dragas, associate professor (education), Durham University said: “For me, storytelling is where I have found most value professionally, creatively and personally as it allows the weaving

together of all these areas in surprising, unique and extraordinary ways. “A story’s unique capacity to teach, inform, enthuse, entertain, educate and so much more affords it an important place in education: it is arguably humanity’s first ‘teacher’.

“In the context of higher education, it has brought - and continues to bring - this abundance to all who work with it, and this is where the magic lies!”

Chris Thomson, programme lead, teaching, learning and assessment at Jisc said: “We’re sometimes guilty of ignoring storytelling as an important part of learning.

“Stories are how we allocate meaning to experience and create connections with other people.

“I think as our society becomes more and more automated thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), those people who are able to communicate effectively, build empathy and engage each other on a human level are going to become more important than ever, and we will see storytelling play a huge part in this.”

Test Valley School joins HISP Multi Academy Trust

Longstock secondary school has joined a leading multi-academy trust (MAT) in a bid to boost the quality of the education and learning resources offered to pupils.

Test Valley School has partnered with HISP Multi Academy Trust to benefit from its extensive school improvement networks, resources, and collaboration of latest learning practices.

The partnership will give pupils and staff access to a wider range of resources, equipment and initiative to support the school’s improvement.

HISP MAT currently works with schools across wider Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Southampton and Portsmouth areas. In October 2023, Test Valley School was praised by Ofsted in a monitoring visit which found the school on track to being graded ‘Good’ within 18-24 months of the initial inspection in October 2022. Test Valley School joined HISP MAT as part of its commitment to become a ‘Good’ graded school by Ofsted.

Headteacher of Test Valley School Nicky Goodridge said she is really excited about the school’s future with the support of HISP MAT. Nicky added: “I’m eager to see where our partnership with HISP MAT takes Test Valley. To make sure our pupils have access to the very best education, we wanted to widen our support network. Being a part of HISP means we’re now connected to a wide network of specialists who can help Test Valley succeed.”

Deputy CEO of HISP Amanda Parry said: “We’re so pleased to welcome Test Valley to our family of schools.

“Our goal is to offer support and guidance to our schools whilst making sure they maintain their unique characters within the local

community. The partnership will transform Test Valley’s teaching and facilities, giving it the tools it needs to progress.” Director of HISP Learning Partnerships Jo McKeown said: “I am lucky to work with such a dedicated team and community. Our academisation will allow our school to build on what has already been achieved to ensure Test Valley provides excellence for all. Be assured that we will continue to work hard to ensure Test Valley School goes from strength to strength.”
