ROUND UP
‘Education, for most people, means trying to lead the child to resemble the typical adult of his society...but for
me...education means making
creators...You have to make inventors, innovators - not conformists.’ Jean Piaget
A
t a time of unprecedented technological change, the words of Swiss psychologist Jean
Piaget are more apposite than ever. In Edge’s recent publication, Our principles for deeper learning, our chair Neil Bates writes, ‘The answers to today’s global issues – climate change, sustainability, social equity, globalisation, air pollution – can’t just be looked up in a text book.’ Educators across the sector are facing the
challenge of teaching and preparing young people for future careers which are currently unknowable. In the CBI’s annual education and skills survey, businesses made clear that the biggest drivers of success for young people are attitudes and attributes – just 34% said formal qualifications are the top attribute they are looking for, while 86% rated attitude and 68% aptitude as most important. This is reinforced by the World Economic
Forum which shows that the trending skills are creativity, problem solving and emotional intelligence, while the need for memorisation is in decline. Ensuring young people have the opportunity to acquire these skills whilst covering a content-heavy curriculum is a challenge. High quality Project Based Learning is one
approach that can help make learning relevant to real life, focus on developing transferable skills and act as a vehicle to involve employers and the community. Edge has been supporting three schools in the North East in trialling PBL since last
September and already teachers, parents – and the students themselves – are saying it’s having
an impact. From higher attendance and improved behaviour in the classroom, to being more engaged, confident and articulate; one parent says, ‘The knock on effect of three hours a week of project based learning is unreal.’ Our partners at PBLWorks are the world leaders
in designing and facilitating high quality Project Based Learning. We are delighted to be working with them to offer their acclaimed PBL 101 and PBL 201 workshops for the first time in the UK, giving teachers and leaders access to these tools and techniques for the first time. Join us in central Newcastle, from Friday 22 to
Sunday 24 November for just £599 for either PBL 101, a foundational three-day workshop, or for experienced PBL practitioners, PBL 201.
