4-12 NEWS Highlights from the UK education sector 13 VIEWS

With author Kevin Lister, and Patrick Hayes, Director of BESA 14 BESA CORNER

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today, and welcome back to school! This month we focus on the increasingly important topic of mental health and wellbeing in our schools, and also take a look at innovative teaching practices in a classroom context. In our first feature on mental health and

wellbeing, we hear from Julian Murphy, Headmaster of Loughborough Amherst School, who discusses how a growth mindset programme is helping his pupils adapt to the everyday challenges of modern life. In our second, we speak to Jakki Rogers, a primary headteacher with a background in Outdoor Pursuits. Working in schools in areas of low socioeconomic status she has, for a long time, recognised the need to ‘do learning differently’ placing the emphasis on educating the whole child and not just focusing on academic achievement. A passionate advocate of outdoor learning, Jakki has always ensured her pupils are outside in all weathers taking advantage of the rich learning opportunities and mental health benefits of the great outdoors. Finally, in our feature on innovative teaching practices, education consultant and lecturer Charlotte Raby looks at the importance of teaching vocabulary in context, and taking time to explore its nuances, for a rounded education. Elsewhere in the magazine, in our ever-

popular View from the classroom series we speak to Rush Green Primary School deputy head Lisa Humpheryes, who explains how the school impressed Ofsted with its notable improvements, particularly in reading and writing. Remember, we love to hear from you,

you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. Enjoy the issue!
