Free online personal finance education for young adults, suitable for PSHE, structured tutor groups and Duke of Edinburgh Skills training
A
lthough personal finance education is now on the UK schools’ curriculum there has been limited availability of supportive,
no-strings-attached resource. The Open University’s FREE online course ‘Managing My Money for Young Adults’, sponsored by the Chartered Accountants’ Livery Charity, plugs this shortage providing young people and their teachers with an A-Z of how to look after their finances. For use in-class or via independent learning the course includes:
• the impact of earning money • understanding tax and credit ratings • how to borrow wisely and save for the future • Subjects also include student finance and living in shared rental accommodation, to equip school-leavers for the challenges of life in further and higher education too.
The course enables teachers to develop student knowledge of this vital life skill through: • bite-sized articles • video-based learning • short money management exercises and quizzes • a flexible online budget planning tool that can be adapted as financial commitments change

Martin Upton of the Open University Business School says: “Although the target audience for the course is for those in their mid to late teens, it’s sure to benefit from 13 up - to those in their early to mid-20s. Teachers can use course contents to deliver personal finance education in classrooms supported by a free guidance pack, a noticeboard poster and a brief video to introduce the course to students”.

Schools picking up the mental health baton brilliantly! T
rauma Informed Schools UK strongly endorse the 2017 Government Green Paper on Children’s Mental Health Provision stating, “There is
evidence that appropriately trained and supported staff .. teachers… teaching assistants can achieve results comparable to those achieved by trained therapists in delivering a number of interventions addressing mild to moderate mental health problems.” We have seen exactly this, teachers and Senior Leads rising to the
challenge in many of the 450 schools where we have provided training: whole school mental health informed approaches to learning, discipline, nurturing staff, student voice, parent engagement. Proof? Decreased exclusions, increased attendance, attainment, staff retention.
The
Children are worth far more than their test results.
