Research the school’s curriculum Research the school’s curriculum

Academies do not have to follow the National Curriculum, so they have much more flexibility about what they choose to cover however, they do have to teach a broad and balanced curriculum including English,Mathematics, Science and Religious Education. If you are applying to a school that offers an alternative to the national curriculum, do your research beforehand. For example, if you want to be the mathematics lead in a school usingMaths Mastery (primary), you need to know ho w it works!

Your statement needs to convey energy, passion and enthusiasm for teaching. What is it that made you want to be a teacher? Did you have a teacher at school who inspired you to follow the same career path? Or perhaps you had a bad experience at school and want to make a difference? Using examples of previous studies or work experience that relate to your chosen subject or chosen age range is advantageous .

How you apply for your next teaching job will differ depending on the route you take. If you apply directly to a school, you will need to fill in a standard application form from the local authority or trust. However, if you are applying through an agency, it will be CV-led. Regardless, you need to craft your application or CV to showcase what you have led or managed, rather than focusing too much on what or how you have taught. This stage of your career is about leading, managing and improving. You could showcase this experience through covering for a Head of Year (primary) or Head of Department (secondary) in someone’s absence or leading reading across a year group. It will work in your favour if your example can be whole school, however if the only example you have is class-led, that is fine too. You have to understand and be able to read data. You need to be able to identify where gaps are, be able to analyse data and know what you have to do to improve outcomes. Familiarise yourself with FFT – Fischer Family Trust – which provides data and analysis to the schools and local authorities in England andWales. It is important to make yourself aware of how it presents data which will show you the differences in the learning levels of children; who is falling behind, who is gifted and talented, who is learning at expected standard .Without this understanding of data, you will not be able to lead your department or year group to create better learning outcomes.

You should also make yourself aware of, and understand, ASP (which replaced RAISEonline). This data is really important to look at before you apply or go for an interview because it will allow

It is well known that the teacher interview process is daunting, overwhelming and tiring, but if it is with the right school, rewarding in more ways than one! It’s important to prepare for the interview process which can sometimes be two full days if it is a leadership role. Generally, you will be eased in gently with a school tour. You will then need to teach under observation – this is your opportunity to really stand out. You could face a student panel which will feed back to the senior leadership team. Finally, you will have your formal interview. If you are applying for a Head of Year role in a primary school, you may be expected to read data, identify where the gaps are and what you would need to do to improve it. If you are applying for a Head of Year role in a secondary school then this will be classed as pastoral. You will be expected to undertake different pressure tests. For example, you could be asked to prioritise for action a number of emails, from parents and staff. Set yourself some timed practise tests of this nature – develop confidence in your decision making and

prioritising. You may also be asked to plan and lead an assembly as part of your interview for Head of Year in a secondary school.

Do they have any specialist awards? What is their ethos and culture, and how will you fit in? It is an advantage if you can give examples of previous schools that you have worked in that share a similar culture or demographic.

It is really important to know where the school sits from an Ofsted perspective and what journey they are on. Are they a good school that is striving for outstanding? In which case you need to understand, and be able to deal with, the pressures that come with that. On the flip side, if the school is in special measures, you will need to show that you can understand and relate t o that journey.

Make sure you stand out from the crowd when you are teaching under observation. You are going into a classroom that you know nothing about – how are you going to engage the students? How will you find out what the learning levels of the students are? Use

world of teaching, or whether you are looking for you next challenge, it is important to get the basics right!
