ADVERTORIAL

for people like me’. Often parents’ own stereotypes or lack of confidence with these subjects re-enforce this thinking too. Once a young person has mentally withdrawn

themselves from STEM subjects and the possibility of self-identifying as an engineering, it’s a steep climb back. But I’m the living proof that the door is never closed. At the age of 15 I’d written off STEM subjects and never considered a career in engineering. But that changed for me when I was exposed

to a project that showed how engineering can help stroke survivors lead full and happy lives. That was the spark that changed the course of my life. I realised I wanted to use my skills to change people’s lives for the better. I now have a career that does just that and

count myself lucky to be one of those rare people that get out of bed every day fired up by what I do. I want the same for young people. That’s why I’m such an advocate for the power of connecting everyday life with learning. The Holiday Makers events will surprise and

engage young people – and their parents – by bringing alive the role engineering has in everything from the sports shoes their sporting heroes wear to the spaceship Tim Peake travelled in, to the phone they love or to creating amazing virtual reality experiences. The depth and breadth of activities available

means there really will be something for everyone. So jump on board! If you’re as passionate as

me about busting myths around engineering and encouraging more talented young people to embrace rather than dismiss STEM subjects go to www.yearofengineering.gov.uk/theholidaymakers to get started. In it you’ll find everything you need to inspire

your students and to help you promote The Holiday Makers programme on your school website and in your newsletters. So let’s make this summer life-changing.

Because who knows, the six weeks ahead could provide thousands of light bulb moments like the one I experienced that inspire young people to start investigating a career with the potential to get them fired up every day…?

* Calculation based on 9am – 6pm (9 hours of day-time to fill with activities)
