n our second look at the summer learning gap this month and how to avoid it, we
hear from VTCT, a specialist awarding organisation offering vocational and technical qualifications in a range of service sectors. With more than 1,200 approved centres, VTCT has an ever-expanding list of centres throughout the UK and Ireland, with increasing international presence.
Summer holidays are a time for relaxing, having a break and making memories with friends. It is important that young people are able to enjoy themselves and de-stress after exam periods. Considering how to make the most of this
extended holiday season can often be a concern for young people, with pressure coming from parents, friends, career advisors and teachers to make the most of the free time. But far too often, the options open to those
between studies and school-leavers are unclear and myriad, which can lead to confusion and ultimately disappointment because they feel that the time was not used wisely. And for teachers across the country, knowing
what and how to advise students on an individual basis can be difficult, with students often showing signs of fatigue towards the end of the school year, it might seem hard to propose extended summertime training. But it is critical that students do something
productive with their summer break and avoid the so-called ‘summer slide’. Abandoning all learning

stimulus over the summer break could affect students’ ability to cope upon returning to education in September.
Vocational education lends itself to summer learning Summer schools are a strong option for continuing a young person’s academic advancement and social engagement during the
summer break. From drama school, to creative arts, sports and all the way to six-week training courses, there are many opportunities for students to fill their summer days with something worthwhile and fun. What’s more, vocational summer courses
provide the opportunity to learn a new skill and explore different professions that young people may never have previously considered. With many
