Sponsorship for Kids Country from Central England Co-operative

A popular countryside initiative which inspires thousands of eastern counties schoolchildren with vital messages from the world of food and farming has been given a big boost by Central England Co- operative. Kids Country, the

education arm of the East of England

Agricultural Society has announced an exciting, year-long sponsorship package with the Society. Central England Co-operative sponsorship will provide both financial support and local resource to support the 18 events that Kids Country will be holding during 2017. The Kids Country programme consists of interactive, hands-on events

about food, farming and the countryside. Activities include potato planting and harvesting, learning about chickens,

bee observatory visits and the annual Food & Farming Day at the East of England Showground. In 2016, the programme reached over 6,000 children from across the Eastern region and beyond. Speaking about the support from Central England Co-operative, Karen

Ball, Member and Community Relations Officer said: “The Co-operative has a long tradition of giving back to the community, and we welcome the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives and education of local children. We look forward to building on our successful partnership with Kids Country, and bring a greater understanding of food provenance and the countryside to children through these wonderful events.” The Kids Country team is headed up by Sandra Lauridsen, who

commented on the sponsorship deal: “We are delighted to be working together with Central England Co-operative, whose values of making a difference mirror our own so closely. We are passionate about children’s rural education, and to have this recognised and supported so positively by Karen and her team is a real boost. Their support will help us to deliver an even more exciting and engaging programme in 2017.” The sponsorship began on 1 January, just in time for Breakfast Week,

which will see the Kids Country team and Central England Co-operative volunteers visit three local schools to help them learn about where our breakfast comes from. Any schools who are interested in participating in a Kids Country event

should contact the Education Team at the East of England Agricultural Society on 01733 363514.

Planning permission has been granted for Bromley Hall School in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to meet the Borough’s growing demand for primary school places. The proposal suggests a refurbishment and

extension of the original Grade II listed building which is set to become a 420 pupil primary school with nursery facilities. The existing building dates back to the 1960s,

and was one of the first purpose built schools in the country for children with special needs. The original building has been vacant for several years requiring substantial repairs and improvements to bring the premises back into use. The existing fabric to the building will be upgraded and the retained building is targeted to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’, with the standalone new-build to be ‘Excellent’. The classrooms and group spaces have been

designed as independent forms with glazed circulation corridors in between. Each classroom is defined by elegant and dynamic roof forms with roof lights providing a well-lit soft light and permitting passive ventilation. The combination of these distinctive roofscapes was the major contributor to the architectural character and the reason for the building’s listed status. A well-crafted new-build pavilion for Early

Years pupils, inspired by the qualities of the existing building, will be positioned to the rear of the site with dedicated play areas. The design adopts a simple form clad in a dark grey brick to relate to its protected heritage context and convey a restrained and respectful architectural character. Colour to the window reveals and roof lights inject a playfulness appropriate to its use. Proposals encompass extensive landscaping and new playgrounds. The curved boundary walls

Free app launched to help children engage creatively with STEM

In 2015, to coincide with Tim Peake becoming the first British astronaut aboard the International Space Station, the Unlimited Space Agency (UNSA) launched The Astro Science Challenge, a story-led series of

interactive tasks designed to engage children aged 7-11 with STEM subjects. UNSA, whose mission is to inspire and help train the next generation of young scientists and space explorers, worked in collaboration with some of the UK’s top science organisations to create high quality lesson plans accompanied by videos with guest appearances from Tim Peake. Project creators the Unlimited Space Agency are launching a free new app for iOS and Android on 10th January to allow children to take part in the project and be inspired by Tim’s mission indefinitely. The app is a new tool to engage children in STEM subjects. It can

be used on the move, in the class room or at home on phones, tablets or computers. Using the app, Cadets are tasked with missions, which are presented through videos on the app and helped along by parents or teachers who are provided with extensive lesson plans and resources. Each mission uses examples from Tim’s time in space creatively linked to the national curriculum. To complete each mission, Cadets upload videos, pictures and writing to evidence their work, which is marked by their Team Leader. Badges are awarded for each successful mission and unlock the next episode in the story. Tim Peake is a British European Space Agency Astronaut and

patron of the Unlimited Space Agency. This project is one of the official education projects supported by the UK Space Agency surrounding Tim's mission. He said, “The Unlimited Space Agency is great. Their approach to inspiring children about science is rigorous, fun and it works! I’m proud to serve with them on their mission to inspire the next generation of scientists and space explorers.”
