UK charity to broadcast live nature lessons for primary school pupils
UK outdoor education charity the Field Studies Council is helping to brighten up home-schooling for primary pupils and their parents with a new and exciting programme of live nature lessons. Starting on February 2, the #PrimaryNatureLive programme will encourage
children to get outside and explore their local wildlife, learn about the environment and discover the secrets to building an outdoor shelter. There will be five lessons in total and all sessions will be broadcast on the
FSC YouTube channel at 10.30am and run for approximately 40 minutes. The Nature Live lessons are aimed at KS1 and KS2 primary pupils and they
follow on from the successful #FieldworkLive programme of lessons which were delivered by FSC tutors during the first national lockdown. Simon Ward, FSC Head of Group (East), said interest in the FSC’s last
programme of live lessons was remarkable with more than 370,000 pupils worldwide tuning in to take part. Each lesson is accompanied with a set of resources and worksheets as well
as how-to-guides. u

Call for UK teachers and students to apply for the Global Teacher Prize 2021 and new Global Student Prize
Jamie Frost, winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2020 COVID Hero award, in partnership with UNESCO, has urged UK teachers to apply for the 2021 edition of the prize. Jamie also urged, for the first time, UK students to apply for its new sister
award, the
Chegg.org Global Student Prize. The Varkey Foundation has launched the
Chegg.org Global Student Prize this year, a $50,000 sister award to the Global Teacher Prize, to create a powerful new platform to highlight the efforts of extraordinary students throughout the world that are making a real impact on learning, the lives of their peers and on society beyond. The prize is open to all students who are at least 16 years old and enrolled in an academic institution or training and skills programme. Part time students as well as students enrolled in online courses are also eligible for the prize. Together, the Global Teacher Prize and the Global Student Prize will tell
inspirational stories from both sides of education. The prizes will shine a spotlight on the great work teachers do in preparing young people for the future and the amazing promise the brightest students are showing in their learning and far beyond. Applicants for the Global Teacher Prize and the Global Student Prize can
both apply at
www.globalteacherprize.org and the closing date for applications is Friday 30 April 2021.
Peterborough initiative helps primary schools reduce screen time during lockdown
Kids Country, a Peterborough-based education initiative, is once again helping primary schools across the region to reduce the amount of screen time for Key Stage 1 and 2 aged children as part of their new ‘home-schooling’ timetable. Kids Country is the educational arm of the East
of England Agricultural Society, and education manager Sandra Lauridsen commented: “We know that teachers and parents are worried about any negative effects from too much screen time during this lockdown, and the benefits of getting outdoors at least once a day are huge on both mental and physical well-being, so we want to remind everyone of the completely free library of activity resources we have on our website, that will then help you stay away from the screen the rest of the day. It is great to hear that pupils are getting ‘live’ teaching time with their teachers on laptops and

tablets, but we want to make sure children have access to opportunities to learn outside too. “With everything from how to sow seeds to
making a bee bath, and from minibeast hunts to making bird feeders, we are lucky to have worked with our supporting farmers, food producers and countryside organisations during the first lockdown in 2020 to put these materials together, and they work just as well now,” continued Sandra. The range of free resources also includes a
library of recipes suitable for cooking with all primary school ages – a great solution to get children away from the desk and learning about food when the weather is not being helpful!
