Editor’s comment

So the US Department of Justice has apparently reversed the 2011 judgement that the ancient Wire Act only applied to sports betting. The repercussions of this will take a wee while to work out, but in the short term it has thrown America’s still-young internet gaming market into a frenzy. It is surprising that in 2019, we are still arguing about the pursuits of adults in their leisure time. Alcohol remains freely available, despite having a colossal impact on healthcare and pretty much anything else you can name; smoking remains legal and has rudimentary age restrictions, and that’s all despite it being well documented now that, simply, it kills; but mention gambling and it’s like throwing a lit Zippo into the middle of a farting competition. Reason goes out of the window, logic a relic smashed by the wildly-waving hands of hysteria. America, the issues are not with what people do with their leisure time – the issues are educating people about potential harms in all aspects of life. They’re adults; if an adult can walk down the road to visit a casino, why can’t they play online? Hell, why can’t they gamble on sports online? There is no good reason. We’re all grown-ups here, how about we sit down and talk like grown-ups? This issue comes out just before ICE – I hope we

see you there. And if not there, perhaps at the British Casino Awards (www.britishcasinoawards.co.uk)… Enjoy the issue.
