What was great about 2018? The US Supreme Court’s repeal of PASPA in May, allowing individual states to decide whether or not to allow sports betting, created a huge amount of interest and activity in the sector including the launch of several new sports books in New Jersey. It’s been an extremely exciting time for GeoComply to be a part of this opportunity and to support our clients through their expansion into new markets. After the tragedy that Las Vegas suffered in October 2017
we felt it was important for us to give something back to the community that has given us so much. With this in mind, we turned our annual pre-G2E event into a fundraiser and were delighted to donate, with the support of our generous industry partners, over $60,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada. Lastly, we are gratified that all our hard work was
recognized by the industry with GeoComply and our solutions making the shortlist for several important awards and winning, for the second time, the prestigious Global Gaming Award for Responsible Business of the Year at the 2018 G2E Conference.

What was bad about 2018? The US Supreme Court’s repeal of PASPA has justifiably brought a lot of interest and attention from many industries that were not otherwise following the gaming industry as closely. With so much revenue at stake, the criticism on how regulators regulate and how gaming operators operate became front page news. When speaking about regulating sports betting Sen. Orrin Hatch stated, “We cannot allow this practice to proliferate amid uneven enforcement and a patchwork race to the regulatory bottom.” I strongly believe statements like these making the news headlines, illustrate how much more work there is to be done to better communicate the benefits that US gaming regulators bring to the regulated gaming industry. It is important to remember that the repeal of PASPA is creating the opportunity for sports books to operate legal, regulated and licensed sports books and to contribute to the US economy by hiring US-based staff and paying significant tax, rather than the black market, illegal sports betting industry that exists in the vacuum and does not contribute to the US.
What are you excited about for 2019? With more states expected to pass legislation to allow sports betting in 2019, we’re very excited about the expansion of the market and to be supporting all of our partners and operators as they launch products in the new year. We are also very excited to work with the industry on better communicating the benefits that regulated sports betting is going to bring to the US economy.
Any personal New Year resolutions you’re happy to share? GeoComply’s technology has many interesting applications and next year we’ll be looking at ways that we can expand our collaboration with law enforcement in order to assist in the prosecution of fraud outside of the geolocation space. As well, we will be working diligently with our partners and the industry to extend the awareness, research and funding for responsible gaming in all jurisdictions.
