MIRRORS & MIRRORED CABINETS Alex Balfour

Metlex: A Clearer Vision for Illumination

Alex Balfour, Business Development Director at Metlex, speaks to BKU Editor Matt Broughton about rebranding, intelligent lighting and building a specialist proposition for the future.

clarity of purpose rather than wholesale change. “2025 was a pivotal year for Metlex – one that

marked both reflection and reinvention,” Alex explains. Central to that transformation was a strategic rebrand, designed to sharpen the company’s identity and reposition it as a specialist within a more focused category. “The most significant decision was our strategic

rebrand, clearly positioningMetlex as a specialist in illuminated mirrors and bathroom cabinets,” he says. “This wasn’t change for change’s sake; it was a deliberate move based on customer insight, market trends and our own strengths.” That process involved more than a visual

refresh. “We streamlined our portfolio, invested in design and engineering, and refined our visual identity,” Alex notes. “The result was a more focused, confident Metlex, built for long-term growth.” That clarity now underpins the company’s direction for 2026. “Our overarching goal is to strengthen our position as a specialist through the launch of Metlex Illuminated,” he explains. The emphasis is on UK-designed products that combine contemporary aesthetics with intelligent lighting and long-lasting build quality. “Every element has been purposefully developed to add value for showrooms, simplify

or Metlex, 2025 marked a decisive shift in direction – one shaped by

installation for trade professionals and enhance everyday use for homeowners.”

Momentum andmarket response Early signs suggest the strategy is resonating. The start of 2026 has brought strong engagement from customers and partners alike, particularly following the brand’s presence at KBB. “The start of 2026 has been incredibly encouraging,” Alex says. “Customer response to our focused range has been overwhelmingly positive, and that momentum was clearly reflected at KBB.” Rather than simply showcasing new products,

the event allowed Metlex to communicate its repositioning more clearly. “Conversations were more purposeful, footfall was highly engaged, and we saw genuine excitement around our illuminated products,” he adds. “Particularly from those looking for differentiation in a competitive market.”

Designed to stand out and perform At the centre of the new offer are two key ranges: Rana and Situla, each designed to deliver a distinct take on illuminated bathroom mirrors. “Rana is our most premium illuminated mirror

range,” Alex explains. “It delivers a refined balance of atmosphere, performance and luxury.” The design combines layered edge and ambient lighting to create depth and warmth,

while its framed form introduces a more sculptural presence. “With adjustable lighting, touch-free control

and an integrated demister, Rana offers statement design without sacrificing everyday practicality,” he adds. Situla, by contrast, takes a more pared-back approach. “Situla offers a cleaner, more contemporary expression of illumination,” Alex says. “It combines crisp edge lighting with a soft ambient glow for clear, even reflections.” Designed with usability in mind, it minimises shadows while maintaining a calm, modern aesthetic. “Intelligent lighting controls, a sleek minimalist form and installer-friendly engineering make it an ideal solution for modern bathrooms.” Across both ranges, the emphasis is on combining visual appeal with everyday performance. “What sets Rana and Situla apart is our focus on intelligent lighting design combined with premium build quality and real-world usability,” Alex explains. “Both ranges go beyond aesthetics, pairing

refined design with user-centric features such as adjustable lighting, touch-free controls and integrated demisters.” Installation has also been carefully considered.

A key innovation is Metlex’s patented Easy installation bracket. “It allows for greater tolerance and adjustment

during installation, with the flexibility to level the mirror even after drilling holes,” Alex says. “It makes installation faster, easier and more forgiving, while ensuring a precise, secure fit every time.”

Building on a new chapter With the foundations now in place, the focus for the remainder of 2026 is on building momentum. “Expect continued product development within our illuminatedmirror and cabinet focus, alongside further brand-building activity and support for our showroom partners and installers,” Alex says. The strategy is one of steady progression

rather than rapid expansion. “We’ll be expanding ranges, refining details and continuing to listen closely to themarket.” For Metlex, the rebrand was only the beginning. “The rebrand was the start of a new chapter – 2026 is about turning that vision into lasting value for our customers and partners,” Alex concludes.
