INDUSTRY VIEWS INDUSTRY Planning a family bathroom

The bathroom is undoubtedly one of the busiest rooms in the home, so it’s vital to consider several practical elements when planning a space that works for the whole family. This might be smart storage solutions to keep the space organised and

store cleaning products out of reach from little ones or it might be the addition of non-slip shower surfaces, to allow safe use for older generations. We recommend ranges which feature smart solutions like vanity units, tall shelving or mirror cabinets that allow for additional storage to be brought into the bathroom. With hygiene an obvious top priority, wall- hung furniture and ceramics are also a great pick to make cleaning effortless. Finally, don’t be

afraid to have fun in a family bathroom, after all you want the space to appeal to the whole family – so when it comes to accessories, be brave with colour, patterns and textures!

The future of bathrooms

Over the last 10 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of multigenerational households, with one in three now cohabiting with either their elderly parents or grown-up children. This has only been exacerbated by the pandemic as many elderly relatives moved in with families and grown up children returned home. This means that whilst style is important, functionality needs to be a key

consideration for consumers in order to ensure their bathrooms are functional for all their family’s needs. In addition to this and following on from the circumstances of 2020/21, the

number of those over 50 who are experiencing loneliness has become extremely prevalent and is set to reach two million by 2025. In order to combat this problem, co-housing communities, where residents may share facilities such as green spaces and washing facilities are becoming ever more popular. In order to cater for both of these growing segments, a range of easy access baths, showers and accessories that allow for comfortable, independent and safe bathing/ showering should become more widely available.

Investing in brassware is a sales opportunity not to be missed

How much do you encourage your customers to invest in good quality brassware as part of a sale? Far from a practical add- on, brassware is a fundamental element of a bathroom’s design and as such is one that is well worth consumers investing in. Why should sanitaryware and brassware be considered as part of the same package? Because the right choice of taps can make sanitaryware look more high-end, and vice versa, with the wrong choice having a negative effect on the overall look, cheapening it regardless of the investment made. The same can also be said for accessories – an important part of

the design process that are so often left until last or left off the sale altogether. There is so much opportunity for personalisation within the brassware and accessories sector that I think everyone should be encouraging the investment.
