there’s more to paint than meets the eye

Here, Orla Turner, Brand Manager at Valspar Trade explores how paint can be used to create welcoming spaces, as well as catering to the cleaning and durability standards needed in care homes...

Creating a welcoming and comforting environment is at the heart of any successful care home design. For residents – including the elderly, vulnerable and those living with dementia – the interior scheme can play a vital role in shaping how safe, calm and ‘at home’ they feel. The right colour palette can help to aid navigation, provide a calming interior and bring a sense of familiarity that enhances wellbeing. Beyond visual appeal, specifying the right paint for a care environment also calls for the careful consideration of durability and maintenance. Whether it’s corridors, social spaces or bedrooms, walls are high-touch, high-traffic surfaces. They need to withstand daily wear and tear, plus rigorous cleaning regimes, all without compromising on appearance.

Here, the right paint can make a real and measurable difference – not only to residents, but also to the staff and families who support them. Cleaning and maintenance Any ability to extend cyclical maintenance schedules will be invaluable, not only helping to free up maintenance teams to tackle other jobs but also minimising disruption to staff and residents. For elderly residents, any disruption to a normal routine or familiar surroundings could cause considerable stress and upset. Take bedroom renovations as an example, with staff needing to find a vacant room for the resident and transfer all their belongings with them.
