OFFSITE STRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS
Let’s work at this together, says Fire Aware
Growing fire safety organisation Fire Aware has sent a message to the built environment sector - “We’re all in this together so let’s collaborate.”
Fire Aware CEO Gavin Skelly gave the reminder of the importance of working closely in the supply chains in the post- Grenfell era as the legal process in the aſtermath continues to its conclusion.
Gavin Skelly said: “We have listened to the calls from the inquiry into Grenfell and the subsequent fall-out and we are all acutely aware of not getting fire safety right. Let’s start to collaborate make sure we are all doing our job to ensure this never happens again. “The challenges of the new legislation and the Building Safety Act are sometimes quite complex and challenging for everyone but not insurmountable if we share issues and find solutions.
“There is a need to commit to best practice beyond the legislation itself, and once a company or an individual does that then everything changes. We are here to protect the public as they move about in our towns and cities. They have a right to feel safe, and we all have a responsibility. This is a vocation, not just another job.”
Skelly highlighted Fire Aware’s own Code of Conduct and specific charters which make specific demands across all specialisms for all members who join. Dame Judith Hackitt – who led the Grenfell Inquiry – has called for cultural change through moral and ethical behaviours, recently supported by the new independent Building Safety Regulator (BSR) which has been created to ‘promote competence and higher standards.’ Skelly said all of those involved in the design, construction, management, maintenance and letting of the built environment need to understand that they have an obligation to fire safety even if their business is not directly connected with fire specialisms.
Fire Aware continues to focus on the moral responsibility of all those working in the fire safety supply chain including designers, developers, asset owners, managers and other stakeholders. It aims to change the culture of the built environment sector with its moral Code of Conduct via a series of charters designed to influence how member companies behave in upholding their duty of care. Fire Aware is a recognised membership body serving the built environment and related sectors with a common aim to work and trade responsibly to all best practice standards in the interests of the safety of the general public.
Egger invests in future of mmc with new appointment
Recognising the value MMC offers to the construction sector, particularly within the housebuilding market, EGGER has appointed Barry Meacher in the newly created role of Senior Account Manager for Modern Methods of Construction.
With a particular emphasis on timber framing, the role focuses on strategic forward-thinking in the market, including growing EGGER’s brand presence within the UK’s MMC space. As part of the role, Barry Meacher will be working in close collaboration with EGGER’s product management team, looking at new product development and evaluating the manufacturer’s portfolio to see how existing solutions can be further developed to meet the evolving market.
Barry brings varied career experience to the role, spanning production, customer service and technical roles within the timber engineering industry, including most recently having worked as EGGER Account Manager for Scotland and the North region over the last four years.
Speaking about his appointment, Barry said: “It’s clear that MMC and timber framing is a significant growth area for the industry. This is especially true for the housebuilding market where it’s critical to its success; the UK Government’s targets are not going to be met with traditional brick and block. In challenging times for the industry, it’s a real statement that EGGER is choosing to invest in the area of MMC, and I’m excited and proud to be tackling this new role and responsibility.
“When you consider timber frame builds, contractors need to have materials and a supply chain that they can rely on. Quality and reliability are key to success, two qualities that are nothing new to EGGER and its approach. For me, the emphasis is going to be on innovating and evaluating, ensuring that we have the right solutions for both now and the future. Innovation is something that’s close to my heart and so I’m looking forward to the challenge!”
A great example of EGGER evolving its product portfolio to suit current industry challenges is its Peel Clean Xtra Large board. The larger format version of existing Peel Clean Xtra has been designed specifically with offsite cassette manufacturing in mind, allowing for floor cassettes to be constructed faster and with less joints.
