GOVERNMENT NEEDS ‘TO INTRODUCE LONGER-TERM MEASURES TO HELP BUSINESSES REDUCE THEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND KEEP NET ZERO ON TRACK’
According to a new report from npower Business Solutions (nBS), Third Party Intermediaries (TPIs) are urging the government to introduce longer-term measures to help businesses reduce their energy consumption and keep Net Zero on track. In a new version of its 2023
Business Energy Tracker, nBS surveyed more than 50 TPIs on how they felt the energy market had impacted their business customers’ confidence, as well as the policy decisions needed to better support them in the future. The report reveals that more than half (55%) of
TPIs say energy is the biggest risk their business customers are facing, with 84% stating that energy is now firmly a board level concern. In addition, almost three quarters (71%) felt that
the Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS) – which was introduced on 1 April 2023 as a replacement for the Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) and is due to end on 31 March 2024 – didn’t go far enough to support businesses. The views of the TPIs surveyed
echoed those of businesses, with both saying that long-term support to help businesses reduce overall energy demand needs to be a top government priority. Anthony Ainsworth, chief
operating officer at nBS, explains
the Business Energy Tracker reveals that “Energy continues to be a c-suite concern, and this shows no sign of stopping. As a result, both the TPIs and businesses we surveyed said that they believe the government needs to offer more long-term support to help businesses. “In fact, TPIs had stronger views than end user business customers on the levels of help offered so
far. While one in seven (13%) businesses believe nothing is being done at policy level, this rises to nearly a quarter (23%) of TPIs. They clearly feel strongly about how they can help their customers navigate these ongoing challenges.” However, while energy is ranked as the biggest
concern facing business in 2023, the new Business Energy Tracker also revealed a difference in opinion on whether energy prices will continue to rise over the next 12 months. When businesses were surveyed earlier this
year, many believed that their energy costs would continue to increase, with almost three quarters (72%) of businesses anticipating that the cost of energy will keep
rising. There was a slightly more optimistic view from TPIs, who were surveyed later in the year, when wholesale prices were showing signs of some stability. While 43% of TPIs agreed prices would slightly increase, nearly the same amount (42%) believed they would decrease slightly, and 15% believed there would be no change.

energy used in commercial buildings in the UK? In our Lighting & controls section in this issue (from page 15), we not only find out how smart lighting can prove beneficial for organisations, but also how lighting controls have evolved to make buildings more intelligent and sustainable than ever before. But it’s not just when lighting our buildings that
W
we can achieve energy savings. According to a report from GreenMatch (
www.greenmatch.co.uk/), Christmas lights ‘consume a staggering amount of electricity. In the United States alone, the energy used by Christmas lights amounts to 6.63 billion kilowatt hours annually, enough to power 14 million refrigerators’. By adopting efficient solutions, switching to LED or solar-powered lights, and using timers so the lights only come on at certain times of the day, we can, however, significantly reduce the amount of energy used. So, when it’s dark and cold, let’s move to energy efficient Christmas
lighting to ensure we keep that festive cheer! And on that note, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2024.

commented: “Thanks to our in-house expertise and track record in asset management, utilities construction and network adoption, we’re uniquely placed to provide a ‘one-stop-shop’ covering
elcome to the Winter issue of Energy & Sustainability Solutions. Did you know that lighting accounts for almost 40% of all
everything from financing to network connection, charge point installation and operation. We think of it as ‘charge points as a service’, where everything is delivered through a rental agreement, with no upfront costs whilst unlocking access to high- quality, cost-effective charging technology.” EA NZ offers a mix of rapid-fast and ultra-fast
EV charging units from 7kW to 360kW. A digital dashboard provides site operators with 24/7 access to charge point data, consumption reporting and management information.

EFFICIENT BOILERS HEAT THE BEETHAM TOWER
Four Evomod 1000kW output boilers from Ideal Heating – Commercial Products have been installed at Beetham Tower in Manchester. At 47-storeys, this is one of the UK’s tallest building outside of London. Manchester based mechanical and electrical
contractor Atmostherm, chose Evomod boilers for this site, based on their small footprint and modular nature. Available in 250, 500, 750 and 1000kW outputs, the Evomod will achieve an output up to 1MW from a single unit solution, together with a minimum footprint that enables the product to be installed where space is limited. Each module provides a maximum of 250kW heat output and will modulate down through a sophisticated control system. The Evomod 1000kW output boilers have been installed with Plate Heat
Exchangers to achieve the appropriate pressure on the output in order to pump the hot water across the entire building. The new boilers are now fully operational and are being used to carry out
the heating across the entire building, including the residential apartments, plus the Hilton Hotel and its health and fitness facilities.
