ILLUMINATING THE BENEFITS OF WIRELESS LIGHTING CONTROL
Lighting controls have evolved significantly to make buildings more intelligent and sustainable than ever
before. A recent demonstration of this is the wireless lighting project delivered for an events venue in the heart of London. James Huntington, OEM controls and solutions manager for Tridonic, explains
engineering, measuring, and prototype testing to achieve the required results. Fortunately, Tridonic’s LEDs were compatible with chosen light sources, working seamlessly with LEDiL holders and reflectors. Opting for remanufacturing over purchasing new fittings significantly cut the building’s carbon footprint and the amount of waste going to landfill. Tridonic supplied 189

aberdashers’ Hall is owned and utilised by the Haberdashers Company: One of the Great
Twelve City Livery Companies; an ancient merchant guild of London. It is also hired out as a venue for conferences, weddings, events and parties. But when the hall began to experience lighting
failures, a new solution was needed. The brief was to provide a wireless lighting control
system that would be easy-to-use and retrofit, whilst also fully upgrading the existing seven- year-old lighting system inside Haberdashers’ Hall. In addition, the lighting system needed to enhance the architectural features of the hall, such as the natural wood fixtures and finishings that provide a sense of modern opulence. Wireless controls were a necessity to ensure the wiring infrastructure in the Hall would remain intact. The solution – led by Silent Design, which
specified Tridonic’s controls and solutions within the project – focused on retrofitting and reusing existing infrastructure, and minimising waste.
A FLEXIBLE SOLUTION As retrofitting involves adapting existing luminaires for new components, this needs extensive

environment to achieve their desired ambiance. Using the wireless Tridonic Xpress Switches
allowed the client to select up to four scenes. The scene plates are used to create scenes that provide atmosphere and drama to their hosted events and occasions, while futureproofing the building for future changes or enhanced functionality (via over the air firmware updates, for example). All light sources were Tridonic SLE G7 LEDs,
with a colour temperature of 3000K and a high colour rendering of RA>90, a highly customisable solution that helped to accentuate the true colours of the natural wood finishes in the hall. The high efficiency of the G7 LED chips meant
that the existing heatsinks could be retained, with a 20-30% energy saving achieved by utilising these new fixtures. The LEDs supplied blended energy saving with
high colour rendering and high efficiency to achieve the overall effect.
IMPRESSIVE ENERGY SAVINGS The results are undoubtedly impressive. Through the enhancements made, the total energy savings per year will be 43087.51kwh, with a carbon saving

per year of 23267.26kg. Over five years, the cost saving (based on 0.15p per kwh) will be £32,316. Furthermore, utilising remanufacturing techniques
during the retrofit the project has saved 178.1kg of waste from going to landfill. Retrofitting existing fixtures always poses
challenges, but Tridonic’s expertise in LED technology and adaptable products made the process smoother. Prototyping, engineering and testing were essential to ensure compatibility and optimal results. The ability to retain existing heatsinks due to the high efficiency of Tridonic LED chips reduced waste and furthered the project’s environmental goals, while implementing wireless technology allowed the wiring infrastructure in the hall to remain intact. This project serves as a shining example of
how innovative lighting solutions can transform spaces, reduce environmental impact, and benefit both clients and communities. We were able to fulfil the client’s brief to retrofit innovative new lighting solutions into Haberdasher’s Hall, to enhance its heritage features and create a more sustainable system.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS Employment of basicDIM Wireless controls not only enables easy operation, but also provides a future- proof solution, with the end user able to modify and upgrade the lighting system with minimal effort. Key to the success of the project was the fitting
of a lighting system that enhanced the aesthetics of the hall’s natural wood finishes. This aspiration was delivered with the provision of high-quality LED light sources with a colour temperature of 3000K and a colour rendering index (CRI) of Ra>90, making the wood finishes stand out. As well as creating on-point aesthetics, the
project achieved impressive energy savings of between 20% to 30% compared to the previous lighting sources. This reduction in power consumption not only lowers operating costs but also reduces the environmental footprint. The new lighting system not only improved
energy efficiency but also contributed to the hall’s ambiance. Furthermore, the high-quality lighting and flexible wireless control enhance the hall’s visual appeal, making it a more inviting and socially valuable space for various events and activities.
