Bacon named Scotland’s favourite morning roll filling

Bacon has been crowned Scotland’s favourite morning roll filling, according to a survey of more than 1,000 Scottish adults commissioned by McGhee’s Bakery. The research found 34% of Scots prefer bacon, ahead of

square sausage (27%),

followed by egg (14%), sausage links (9%) and black pudding (4%). Almost half (47%) favour a soft and fluffy morning roll, while 30% prefer a crispy roll and 17% opt for a well-fired version. The findings support the Good Morning

Rolls campaign, led by food historian Peter Gilchrist, which aims to secure UNESCO recognition for Scotland’s morning roll

tradition as part of its Living Heritage programme in 2027. Peter Gilchrist said: “This campaign

recognises that morning rolls are more than ingredients; they are part of Scotland’s living culture. Scottish culture isn’t just found in museums or wrapped in tartan. Sometimes it’s in a butter-stained paper bag, but it’s just as important if we say it is.” McGhee’s, Scotland’s largest independent

wholesale morning roll baker, produces more than two million rolls each week and has donated its research to support the campaign. The survey also revealed Scotland’s continuing sauce divide, with 33% rejecting

tomato sauce on a breakfast roll and 32% saying they would never add brown sauce. Aisling McGhee, Commercial Director at McGhee’s Bakery, said: “The data is fascinating and it shows just how close morning rolls are to Scots’ hearts… the morning roll is part of Scotland’s daily rhythm, passed from generation to generation and shared in kitchens, cafés and workplaces all over the country.”

Jason’s Sourdough broadens breakfast offering with Crumpet Thins

Jason’s Sourdough has expanded its breakfast portfolio with the introduction of Crumpet Thins, a new product aimed at consumers seeking a lighter take on the traditional crumpet while capitalising on continued demand for premium bakery products.

Launched into Morrisons on

TOUS les JOURS has been named the Official Bakery Café Sponsor of BTS THE CITY ARIRANG NEW YORK, with a programme of themed experiences running from 24 July to 9 August across four participating bakery cafés in the New York area. The activation includes a limited-edition BTS THE CITY ARIRANG

Cake, exclusive merchandise, themed décor, photo opportunities and interactive fan experiences. Four official pop-up events and an immersive presence at the ARMY ‘MADANG’ event will also feature giveaways, samples and Korean bakery favourites. Max Gallegos, Chief Marketing Officer at TOUS les JOURS, said:

“Korean culture is not a trend for us. It is at the heart of our food, our hospitality, and the experiences we create every day.” He added that transforming the cafés into fan destinations gives BTS fans a place to gather and celebrate through food and shared experiences. The campaign forms part of TOUS les JOURS’ wider effort to

showcase Korean bakery culture to a global audience. Founded in South Korea and owned by CJ Foodville, the bakery café chain operates more than 200 locations in the US and over 1,750 worldwide.

15 July, the new range follows the success of Jason’s Proper Sourdough Crumpets, which have secured listings across major UK retailers including Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons and Ocado. The latest addition has been developed to encourage consumption beyond breakfast, with applications spanning brunch, light lunches and snacking.

Made using the brand’s

signature slow fermentation process, Crumpet Thins contain just four ingredients – flour, water, salt and fermented

wheat flour – creating a crisp, golden finish when toasted while retaining the distinctive flavour profile associated with sourdough. Jason Geary, Master Baker

at Jason’s Sourdough, said the new product was a logical evolution of the company’s crumpet range following the strong consumer response

to its original

launch. He explained that the aim was to create a more versatile format offering a satisfying crunch without compromising the authentic sourdough character that defines the brand.
