SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENT SOURCING
Keeping it colourful Jacobine Mannak, Sustainability Manager at GNT Group, argued that true sustainability means putting the right measures in place to ensure high-quality supplies can be maintained over decades. “Climate change, soil depletion and water scarcity are making it more challenging to grow crops consistently, so it is important to consider which will be resilient in different locations and ensure year after year supply without compromising on quality,” she says. All GNT EXBERRY colours come from non-GMO fruits, vegetables and plants. “We have worked across all areas of our operations to ensure our colours are sustainable. We work with most of our farmers on long-term contracts and are helping train them to achieve recognised standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. and Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA). This supply chain model also gives our agronomists full oversight of the contract

farmers’ fields, so they can ensure the crops are grown using the sustainable and efficient methods we expect,” continues Jacobine. “Our closely managed supply chain allows us to calculate EXBERRY colours’ Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) across scopes 1 to 3. This aligns with the
‘cradle-to-gate’ definition and covers the raw materials, ingredients, upstream transportation, energy consumption during manufacturing, and the overhead factor. We share this PCF data for the majority of EXBERRY colours, so customers can use the information for their ESG goals, product labels and marketing materials.” GNT recently secured an EcoVadis Platinum award for sustainability performance, with a score that puts it in the top 1% of companies in the food manufacturing industry. progress in several areas, including reductions in carbon emissions, resource and water efficiency gains, waste reduction as well as strengthened ethics and compliance practices. A key take-away message is the
importance of working more closely with suppliers and to adopt stringent traceability and auditing practices to allow any sustainability claims to be evidenced.
