Column: Electric vehicles

A small, 98%-efficient bus converter module weighing only 68g (Vicor part CM6135) can be bundled easily with EMI filtering, a reduced cooling structure and enclosure to replace the 25kg 48V battery. Tis frees up considerable space and weight, and can yield savings to €250.

2. Flexibility/scaleability A flexible and scaleable modular power system design approach allows designers to implement standardised solutions across a wide variety of powertrains, such as for SUVs, minivans and light-duty trucks. For example, a minivan’s power

requirements may be 5kW, but powering a light-duty truck with lightbars, tow and plow packages and AC power stations may require 10kW. Using the same modular platform and a little extra space, engineers can quickly add or remove pre- qualified parts to the array to scale power up or down.

While OEMs are introducing electrified

emission compliance standards, there has yet to emerge a harmonised approach for delivering electric power, not only

vehicles to meet CO2

to the motors but to all the vehicle subsystems

Modularity also allows distributed

power architectures from a 48V bus. Power modules can be placed in convenient locations for localised 48V/12V conversion, say, behind the glove compartment, near the boot or by a wheel. Modularity goes beyond design

flexibility, since it allows a better way to streamline power changes and the manufacturing process.

3. Re-usability In vehicle development, qualification and approval of electronic components adds to delays, a process that can take up to three years. So, finding a way to reuse components can save on time and costs. For example, a traditional PDN based

on a discrete DC-DC converter design can consist of over 200 bulky components, whereas modern advanced technologies provide a single high-density power module, simplifying the design and weight of the vehicle.

THE PLACE FOR Failure Analysis and In-depth Non-Destructive Inspection

Cupio Services provides x-ray, acoustic, optical and electronic test, inspection and analysis services.

If you only require inspection, test or analysis services occasionally throughout the year, the requirement to purchase our equipment may not be necessary, this is where Cupio Services is the answer.

• Cutting-edge inspection and test equipment • Functional testers and counterfeit part detection • High resolution x-ray with multiple CT imaging options

• Acoustic microscopes for delamination detection within boards or complex devices

• Full failure analysis reports.
