It’s amazing the difference a year and a bit can make. Last spring, who would have   industry critics; I have yet to see anyone lining up to criticise the drinks industry for the additional sales they made in lockdown, for example. CEO salaries come under scrutiny, business practices are analysed, and every mistake we make as an industry becomes yet another stick to beat us. Some of these sticks are fair enough – when we foster a culture within a business where a VIP manager’s take-home pay is so linked to performance, we encourage that manager to squeeze every last bit of play from a customer. I wonder what the players would see if VIP managers were paid well, educated well (as part of their role), and encouraged to stay up to date on problem gambling studies and treatments? It’s another way to take away another stick, and to own our industry’s problems – and to pre-empt regulatory 
