SUPPLY CHAIN
making on-demand tracking more practical for unpowered and intermittently used assets.” Connectivity is evolving, with devices able
to draw on satellite, Wi-Fi and mobile IoT technologies to maintain continuity and deliver advanced features whether an asset is on the road, in the yard or deep inside a warehouse. “While satellite tracking has existed for some time, standards-based IoT-NTN is starting to make it part of the broader mobile ecosystem. Instead of treating remote coverage as a completely separate deployment, future devices can move more naturally between terrestrial and satellite communication,” Patino explains. Trackers are also acting as gateways for nearby BLE sensors and accessories. This increased connectivity is creating a more economical way to add temperature, door, cargo or equipment data without giving every object its own wide-area connection. Thomas expects to see more conditional logic running on the device itself: “With custom rules loaded onto the unit rather than the software platform, a tracker will function faster and become more responsive, even without any mobile connectivity. Confi gurability will be key for supply chain operations looking to adapt the technology to precise needs.” Meanwhile, not every form of supply chain visibility requires a sophisticated tracking tool. The digitisation of maintenance and compliance
reporting is steadily replacing ineffi cient paper-and spreadsheet-based systems, with cloud-based platforms designed to simplify vehicle safety checks and support condition- based maintenance. “The scope of fl eet and asset management tools has certainly increased recently, enabling transport and warehouse operations to monitor a wider range of vehicles, forklifts, machinery and even tasks,” explains Jim Finnegan, CEO of Pocket Box. The mechanism here is a simple QR code. These are applied to vehicles, assets and locations, and drivers or operatives scan them using an app on a mobile device to bring up the required check or task. Bespoke reports can be created to align with specifi c safety and standards requirements, supported by structured data capture and accurate
timestamping. Any missed check immediately triggers an alert, allowing the operations team to resolve the issue quickly, and all data is stored digitally. “We are seeing companies make signifi cant savings by reducing maintenance costs and freeing up substantial management time. Maintenance scheduling becomes far more based on actual use, so unnecessary servicing costs and unplanned downtime can be avoided. Compliance is also strengthened because nothing can be faked or overlooked, and everything is available in the cloud for any audit or review,” Finnegan adds. The next generation of telematics will not depend on one increasingly powerful device. It will rely on a mix of tools, such as low-power trackers, sensors, cameras, satellite links, site routers and cloud platforms, working together. This convergence is fi nally carrying visibility past the warehouse door, turning separate systems and complementary technologies into an integrated solution that drives productivity, effi ciency and performance improvements in the supply chain.
