WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE WAREHOUSE
C
opriSystems’ bespoke vision and experience in delivering unique, high performance warehousing solutions, enables businesses to respond quickly to any changes whether they are driven by customers or robots.
The role of a warehouse has evolved rapidly in recent years. No longer simply a storage facility with a trusty fork-lift truck to move pallet-loads of stock around, the modern warehouse is expected to be an efficient and agile component of the customer journey. It is central to logistics and distribution management as well as housing boxes. New buying behaviours were already emerging even before customers were told to stay inside or, more recently, only venture into shops if they’re prepared to wear a mask. Shoppers are increasingly reliant on ecommerce, which puts an increasing amount of pressure on warehouses to be pivotal to the whole customer experience. These significant market developments are driving the need for warehouses to operate in a more flexible manner if they are to stand a chance of being able to keep up with the pace of change throughout the rest of the supply chain. We have seen how quickly order volumes can increase with little warning with some of our customers reporting recent sales increases of up to 120 per cent in four months. Additionally, the increase in free returns being offered to customers has added another challenge to logistics operations. Next-day and even in-day delivery have become an expectation and price has been overtaken by fulfilment responsiveness as the leading competitor advantage. Fulfilling this higher level of demand is often hampered by a basic challenge – space. However, refurbishing a generation of out-dated
warehouse buildings or indeed building a new one from scratch would require significant investment, which is far from ideal in an uncertain economic environment.
Businesses must nevertheless be prepared to adapt their existing space quickly so they can continue to respond to spikes in demand, make the necessary adjustments and maintain a smooth flow of goods to minimise the impact to customers. Added to that is the need for them to have room to grow. CopriSystems are able to adapt quickly to build temporary or permanent buildings that can cope with increased stock flow and complex logistics, not to mention new social distancing requirements, as well as allow for innovation and future progression.
At CopriSystems, we have been designing, supplying and installing a wide range of bespoke temporary buildings for over 30 years. Whatever your business needs, whether it’s a more streamlined operation, a quick storage solution for surplus stock or additional covered space to keep goods sheltered from the elements when being unloaded, we’re confident we can help. Our “temporary” warehouse buildings deliver outstanding long-term value and are much more cost-effective than renting or building conventional permanent space, which ties a business into staying at one location.
Despite being “temporary”, they are durable and will often be in the same place for decades. However, as with all of our industrial covered structures, they are carefully and individually designed to lead a dynamic life so can be relocated or modified to suit a business’ ever-changing needs. This helps to provide the flexibility that is required to adapt and grow.

Along with changes in customer behaviour, the warehouse industry must also evolve with the pace of change in automation and embrace this transformation. New robotic technology is driving higher levels of productivity and improving accuracy, as well as enhancing safety. Again this puts pressure on space, after all, technology can only work if you have the room to integrate it and deploy it effectively.
Advances are happening all the time in our own industry too and we remain at the forefront of development with a passion for continuous improvements to design and functionality. We are working closely alongside manufacturers to enhance the longevity and sustainability of our fabrics and building materials so our structures provide greater energy efficiency to benefit our customers and the environment. It’s our job to move into the future with new trends. Even though warehouses and distribution centres have played an important role for many years, they have only recently been talked about as such key players in the retail sector. Their future efficiency is heavily reliant on adaptability and space optimisation, which is why these factors have become a critical focus for us in creating new building designs. This is also where our expertise in designing bespoke solutions really comes into it’s own.
We are undeterred by any project, situation or issue and, with a wealth of experience, spanning several generations, we continue to lead the field in creating the highest standard of structures for industrial applications and ecommerce enabled businesses.
