Mackle Food Company has announced a £6.3million investment to expand its factory, enhance automation, and boost productivity. Established in 2005, Dungannon-based Mackle Food Company specialises in extruded snack products for the early years and healthy eating markets. Supported by Invest Northern Ireland, this strategic investment will enable the company  outside of Northern Ireland and create 32 high- quality jobs. During a visit to the company’s factory in Moy, Dungannon, Kieran Donoghue, chief executive of Invest NI, said: “Invest NI has worked closely with Mackle Food Company since 2007, supporting its journey of innovation, skills development and export growth. 

Ibec groups: One billion containers returned through Deposit Return Scheme


The Irish Beverage Council and Drinks Ireland, the Ibec groups representing the non-alcohol and alcohol beverage industries on the Island of Ireland, have welcomed the news that one billion containers have been returned through the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS). A Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) sees a deposit placed on single-use drinks containers, which is then refunded to the consumer when


they return their bottles and cans. Consumers are incentivised to bring back their used products, which will lead to a reduction in littering and increased recycling. Unlike traditional recycling methods, a DRS aims to create a ‘closed-loop’ recycling system, allowing the returned material to be recycled into new drinks containers, and contributing to Ireland’s separate collection target for plastic bottles – 77% by 2025, increasing to 90% by 2029. By separating plastic and aluminium from


general recycling, the quality of the recycled materials jumps to 98% as part of DRS, compared with just 80% in the traditional recycling bin system. Robert Kiernan, director of the Irish Beverage Council, said: “In just 12 months, we can clearly  containers returned, and a substantial reduction in beverage container litter. This is testament to the considerable efforts undertaken by the beverage industry and Re-turn in implementing an effective DRS for Ireland.”

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag has announces its expansion in the Ireland polymer processing market with Kris Thacker appointed as the company’s dedicated technical sales manager in Ireland. As part of this local development phase, the company has also recruited a new service engineer, Cathal Deegan. Offering on-the-ground, responsive


support, Kris and Cathal are being supported by global medical specialist Andrew Sargisson, as well as UK and Ireland managing director Dave Raine. In addition to on-site visits, Kris and Cathal are welcoming processors weekly to the company’s state-of-the-art Limerick centre. Here, local and multinational moulders and medical manufacturers are  the-art technologies to perform trials and validations. Processors can also access production optimisation training at all levels to help address industry skills gaps. Mr Raine said: “Supporting over 400 machines, our collaborative approach to local customisations and delivering OPC-UA factory tested automated production cells, builds on our growth synergy and investment in infrastructure.”
