Hambleton Hardware & Electrical has been serving the Lancashire village of Hambleton for more than three decades. Still proudly family-run, the shop is a familiar cornerstone of the community, where practical know-how, a friendly chat, and genuine customer care go hand in hand. In this personal piece, Kirsty Holme shares how her father Bryan continues to keep the spirit of traditional DIY and hardware retail alive.

ucked away just behind the main row of shops on Broadpool Lane in Hambleton, Poulton-le-Fylde,


sits a little local gem – Hambleton Hardware & Electrical. It’s the kind of place where everyone knows your name, advice is always free, and a friendly chat is as much a part of the visit as picking up a tin of paint or a new light bulb. For more than 35 years, the shop has been proudly run by the Holme family, continuing a long local tradition – before us came the Walkers, and before them, the Connellys. Over the years the shop has moved and evolved, but it’s always remained at the heart of the village.


A family affair My parents, Bryan and Sue Holme, took over the village hardware shop more than three decades ago. Mum ran it day-to-day while dad worked his full-time job, stepping in after work and every Saturday so mum


could finally get tea on the table. Together, they built a reputation for friendliness, reliability, and proper old-fashioned service.


When mum sadly passed away, dad – now 78 – carried on running the shop six days a week. He’s there come rain or shine, still opening up early and helping customers with everything from electrical advice to
