INDUSTRY COMMENT: BHETA

EXPORT I

TIME TO

A viewpoint from Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of BHETA - the leading UK Trade Association for manufacturers, importers, and distributors who operate in the home improvement and garden sectors.

’m writing in the week of some relatively good news in the UK economy – the latest drop in inflation and

the announcement of TATA Motors’ decision to build its battery factory on our shores. A vote of confidence for the UK, commentators are saying. Having acknowledged that, the Bank of England has a very sluggish outlook for growth in the home market over the next three years. While we all hope that the growth outlook is understated, it’s vital that suppliers give serious consideration to export opportunities. Growth from export can prove easier and more lucrative than expansion in the UK and can unlock attractive extra sales. Even exporting through FOB deals, where the importer buys stock direct, can deliver straight extra margin without having to fund stock.

The subject is especially topical as the Global DIY Summit took place in Berlin last month and BHETA had a significant presence there both in terms of association personnel and member companies from the DIY sector. In fact, of the 26 event sponsors, twenty were part of BHETA. This reminded me what an excellent place the Global DIY Summit is do international business, packed as it is with retail networking opportunities, advice and support, information, contacts, and opportunities for tours of top DIY and garden retail stores. All the help you could need whether you are new to export, or an old hand wrestling with the challenges of Brexit customs controls, more expensive administration, delays, and double duty issues.

Seek advice

Help in all these forms is something that exporters should seek at every stage of the journey – and thanks to the likes of BHETA, there is plenty

United Kingdom, France, Australia, and Italy.

t Admittedly, three of

those territories may involve the complications of the Brexit legacy, but equally four do not.

Moreover, in addition to working territorially, exporters should also be l looking at the online marketplaces for DIY and garden products. With the constraint of physical space removed, e-tailers have scope to range a considerable number of products. Beyond the biggest players, Amazon, eBay, and Mano Mano, consider Alibaba in China, Mr DIY in Malaysia, Walmart in the US, and many others.

BHETA has run recent webinars with MMP Living who supply online marketplaces in the USA and will be hosting a Walmart marketplace webinar in September.

How to go about it

In addition to advice and networking events such as the that previously mentioned above, BHETA also provides member discounts on reports from the pan European trade association, HIMA. Perfect for formulating strategy and targeting, one report details global trends as they affect the European home improvement market, and the second is a directory of 455 home improvement retailers around the world with a page devoted to each one.

Attend Exhibitions such as National Hardware Show in Las Vegas in March 2024, and Eisenwarenmesse – International Hardware Fair in Cologne, also in March. Take advantage of BHETA discounts on the Global DIY

summit itself, where

available. As an example, check out BHETA’s Export Committee, which is an advisory group of experienced senior managers from successful exporters in our industry, such as Croydex, Monument Tools, Spear & Jackson and Vegtrug.

The opportunities

So, let’s consider the most appealing export opportunities around right now. The worldwide home

improvement market was valued at 763 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 4%, the home improvement market value is expected to surpass the trillion- dollar mark by 2027. If that sounds daunting, it’s worth noting that approximately 82.5% of the Global DIY market (€578.14 billion) is concentrated in only eight countries: USA, Germany, Japan, Canada,

delegates from 55 countries this year included 290 of the top DIY and garden retailers. Customer experience, digital transformation and sustainability were just three of the topics covered in addition to store visits and networking. The third Virtual DIY-Summit that will be taking place on 29th September and the 10th Global DIY-Summit happens in Rome from the 11th – 13th June 2024. All BHETA members are automatically members of event organisers, HIMA, and receive a discount off the ticket price, so I strongly encourage BHETA

members

with interest in export growth to consider attending.
